Where do yall get your Terry's from?

Just curious where you find them in local stores? And what to look for, I tried searching, but all I come up with is MF stuff. The MF towels I have just FAILED the CD test pretty bad (Nicsand), going out to try to find some others, and also the Terry Towels I have failed pretty bad (the kind you buy at Schucks, but I figured that). So just on the hunt for good towles today.

Always look for 100% cotton, but this does not always mean that a towel will not scratch. Guess you could take a CD with you to the store and try each towel--try Bed Bath and Beyond or Linens and Things--they have nice towels.

I would also suggest getting some Pakshak or some JT International mf towels--can't go wrong with these!

Good luck:xyxthumbs

I got many of mine from the now defunct Motorhead.net. Was cruising Costco the other day and say a large bag of cotton terycloth towels. Will have to take a closer look at them next time I hit the place. Most of your online detailing shops will have a good variety of towels though. If you feel like spending some money...there is always Bed, Bath and Beyond...stores like that. Just ensure when buying them...they are 100% cotton.

MF towels...I am not too keen on them. I use them for QD'ing...dusting the interior of the car and drying wheels. That is about it.

Hi RedVR6,

Have you ever tried a quality MF ( MicrofiberTech,PakShak,JT,Yosteve's, or DFtowel)? I was once ( for 30+years) a quality cotton towel user( well the first 20 years I used any clean rag I could find around the house :)). I thought Microfibers was just a glorified new fade towel. I gave a few quality MF towels a trial and WOW! They are as good as everyone has been stating.:xyxthumbs They are very soft and absorbent. Buffs out wax/sealant without marring my surface and actually feel more paint friendly than my expensive Chenille-type towels.

What is really funny is that you use MF's for QD'ing which is normally not the safest time to manipulate the paint ( light dirt film ,morning dew, sap, and bird/bug spots) but not for a safer procedure ( car normally perfectly clean) like buffing or applying wax/sealant.:nixweiss

Tusin

When shopping for cotton towels look for 100% USA cotton towels. Even these differ in softness. Feel the towel buy one,use and wash ( no fabric softener and liquid detergent only). Place in dryer and feel. Does it still feel paint friendly. If yes, go buy a few more. If not, try another brand.

I use both 100% cotton and MF's. But more and more I am using the MF's for buffing, Qd'ing and drying and the cotton for the dirty jobs.

Many here, including myself presently, buy MF's from the before mentioned sources with great success in quality and paint friendliness. Try both and see what works best for you in terms of detailing, value and convenience:wavey

nicsand mf's = :scared

we've known this for a long time.

I would'nt spend my money on terrys if you can afford some JT Int or Pakshak's though...

or YoSteve's are good...

blkZ28Conv ,

I got a bunch for MF towels a couple years ago a properautocare and was not overly thrilled with them as far as material removal. Perhaps this spring I will try an new batch of them and see how it goes. As for QD'ing...I should not have said that. I should have been a little more descriptive...I primarily use them only for QD'ing bird droppings when I get lucky enough for that blessing...argh!! Mainly though...I use the MF towels when I am claying the car. Otherwise, the car gets washed frequently enough where I do not do a quick detail.

I grabbed a bag of those too a while ago, but they are far too rough to use on your paint. They work great for grunge-work though, like your rims, wheel wells, etc. I use them till they get pretty dirty and then toss them.

As much as I love how well MF soaks up product and makes buffing very easy, I also like the cotton polishing cloths from Griot's.

Good to know. Will bypass them. ;) I have been eyeballing those Griot's towels for a while...

If you buy cotton, don't just look for the 100% label. Buy stuff made in the USA or Canada, not India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc etc etc.

Any bulk bag of "100% cotton" towels are almost certain to be junk.

MF is almost always better than any cotton towel. I've tried the CD test on some dubious MFs not mentioned here and they were incapable of doing damage. Dirt can make a CD test go wrong. Also, good MFs won't lint as much as cotton can, and are usually more absorbant. They're just better overall.

Like Chewy mentioned, Bed Bath & Beyond or Linens and Things stores have a good variety of towels and prices. I bought one each Fieldcrest Regency and WestPoint Stevens Utica towel for using with QEW. Both are 100% cotton Made in the U.S.A. They were $5 or $6 each. The Utica towel appears to have a deeper nap, while the Regency seems to be a denser weave.

I too believe the good Microfiber products are great for polish/wax/QD removal. There are several MF vendors mentioned throughout the forum. Do yourself a favor and give any of those a try.

What I am looking for in a terry towel is something that is reasonably good, but less expensive than the towels I mentioned above. I need to attack a heavily oxidized non-clearcoated finish with DACP and Meg #9. It is orange in color and therefore the towels will probably not be put back in use on paint again. Scottwax had mentioned Viking 100% cotton, but I haven't been able to find those at any of the usual locations (AutoZone, PepBoys, WalMart, K-mart etc.) Any other mfgs or sources come to mind?
