When Swirls Return....

GregCavi said:
As others have said, you will need to really focus on your wash technique were most of your marring probably came from. If you are looking for a quick swirl removal, you can try ZPC followed by Z5pro. That will look nice.

I really haven't noticed a lack of releasing contaminants with Zaino, so I can't really comment on that. It seems to shed contaminants for me.
:nixweiss

Greg

I dont get that comment either. When I use Zaino I love washing the car because it releases everything. I can go through big storms and it looks the car was just washed after sitting all day.

Actually none, thats the one part of the car I missed. This time I will hit it with some trim detailer, thats about it. My bumper is all scuffed up too, the car is far from perfect. Most would reason I am wasting my time because its not like the car is in concours condition anway. But I like to control everything I am able to. If i can remove the swirs and a few scratches i will do it. In any event I intend to have the front and rear bumper resprayed next spring. No matter though, I am sure just after I have it done some guy in an old rusty buick will bump them and scuff the paint AGAIN anyway.

As for the underbody, the cars got 40K and has been garaged up until now. Every couple of months I get under there with a brush and soap and water and scrub the underbody. Its pretty clean.

And how have you placed in shows?

You said you used a Meguiars wool mitt-it is my understanding that they do not have a wool mitt only a synthetic mitt (I made the mistake of using that once on delicate paint and then it went into the trash can and I got another real wool mitt).

You may want to wash in one direction and dry in another direction to help see what is causing the problem.

When you polish again make sure you tape off a small test spot and figure out some procedure that works with your paint (check under lights and wipe down with 50/50 alcohol/water to make sure you aren't hiding anything), then go ahead and do the rest of the car. Maybe only do a panel at a time and let it go for a few days and see if it meets your expectations.

Didn't place at GM Nationals,... and the rest of the shows have been local shows judged by the public,... you know where the Mayors son gets 1st place for his honda civic with an air intake (I have nothing against hondas). I really don't show the car because i am interested in getting an award. I show it because I am proud of the fact that I own it. As a matter of fact, some of you may even know this if you are from New York, New Jersery, or Pennsylvania; the Bear Mountain Car Show every wednesday,... I stopped going. Every week it was some new different problem. About 5 years ago when I started going it was open to everyone,... any make, model, anything you felt was worth showing. Admission for the car was $2 weekly. I hate to place blame on the imports but thruthfully, the imports moved in and began causing trouble, like burnouts, revving the crap out of their engines. This is in a state park mind you, and the park police are everywhere. Well, after a ton of tickets they finally stopped. As the years progressed up until this year they began putting more and more restrictions on the show. This year, to show your car, if its pre- 87 you have to pay for a $40 pass for the summer. And they make all the cars 87 and up cars park together, on the side, out of the general viewing area. So its like you have the show in the center field and the newer cars on the right hand side off in the distance, for those who are interested in walking over and taking a look. To me I find that pretty insulting. Alot of guys 87 and up have alot of time, sweat, and blood invested into their cars. And they treat them like they are second class citizens. Oh, did I mention the pre 87 cars still get in for two dollars? As for the imports they still show up and pay anyway... but due to the huge police presence and of course they too noticed what is going on; everyone behaves.

So ever week I bring the car, and every week, they let car after car in and then the same person stops me on the way in, and wants to see my summer pass, and then checks the pass against the registeration of the car to make sure its the same one, and then tells me to park all the way the fu*k in the back where nobody walks too. I'm just tired of it. Not to mention people who are supposedly interested in cars (which is the only reason they go there to begin with I am assuming) don't know what it is or why it belongs on the field. I've heard people comment on why their is a taxi cab on the field, or "its totally stock, why does it belong here." So fu*k it. I stopped going. Some would argue, if I am doing it for myself then why do I care what people think, and I really don't, but between the hassling every single week, and the lack of appreciation... why should I even bother?

And to me honestly, I feel my car deserves the same respect a Chevelle or Corvette, Both of which I also own but choose to bring the impala over. Its the last muscle car as far as I am concerned,... maybe you will disagree... but i think its the last one. Its Rear wheel drive, solid axle, handles like sh*t, its big, 4500+lbs with me in it, and its got a 350 V8. With the exception of the 350 (working on a 454 for the chevelle) I think my chevelle fits the same description.

Just ranting,... but you got me started!

The show is not judged and even if it was I wouldn't care. This is something that drives me nuts...this is a constant battle for me. I don't mean to sound like a nut,...

Heh heh, don't worry, you can't sound too nutty to *me*...I even keep *the family minivan* marring-free and do its undercarriage at *every* wash :o

As for the washing techniques, I think I am going to have to read up on them. I agree, I think it is improper washing that is causing this. I have a new designated plastic bucket I use to keep the soap and water in. I have an almost new Meguiars Wool Mit I use to wash it with and no it has never hit the ground. I use a seperate mit to clean the wheels.

Any tips or suggestions on improving my wash technique?

You might check out my washing thread in the Hall of Fame forum. It's evolved a bit since the initial post, so check out some of my latter entries on that thread.

Generally, the problem is to avoid pressing dirt agains the paint and them moving said dirt..that's what causes the marring.

Short-answer-suggestions: Fill the mitt with wash solution, hold it shut at the cuff, and whisk it gently across the paint (don't wear it like a glove or press it against the paint- too much pressure). The shampoo will seep out providing lubrication and flushing.

Move the mitt in interrupted "jiggling" motions, not long swipes. That way any marring that does occur won't be inches-long.

Rinse the mitt out at least twice per panel. Try to never move a dirty mitt across a panel. That can mean rinsing the mitt out a *lot*.

No I hear you. I dont like how the import ricers have taken over things either but its just the way things are. I imagine the generations before us were just as upset when the muscle cars took over at shows when the classic were dominate there. I dont think I could show a car unless it was a total garage queen, just to damn stressful.

And I have never shown the Jag, because I'd stress over what might happen at the show. Too many people around it and I wouldn't want to be the anti-social SOB telling them to back off.

Also, there's the QD-induced marring issue: the car would need to be QDed/etc. lest it be "all dusty" and that'd mar the paint. I'm not gonna mess up my vehicles just so they look good in somebody else's eyes.

Dennis H.
, who has some *wonderful* cars that he shows, runs into this...at the end of show season he has to polish out marring..and that's not always an option for people with (thin) original paint.

So you use no QD at all?

*VERY* rarely I'll use it on a nasty bird-bomb if I won't be able to wash for a while and I'm worried about etching. But generally, no.

The only times I regularly use QDs are a) to help remove polish/compound residue when doing correction b) as an LSP-booster after a wash and c) when layering LSP or otherwise resuming work after the vehicle has sat overnight/etc. in my shop. In that last case, the vehicle is almost always so clean that my white Monster Fluffy is still spotless after I've finshed the QDing...it's just a little added insurance against rubbing something into the paint when I resume work.

I've tried QDing between washes when the vehicle was just a little dusty, but I induced marring (admitedly *very* light, but I had to redo the whole vehicle) even though I QDed as gently as I can imagine anybody doing it... so that was enough for me. I simply won't risk doing something that could undo all my hard work. I know others don't have problems QDing/dusting, but that's them, not me :nixweiss I don't mind advising people to *not* QD as I assume most people who want advice aren't gonna be a lot better at this stuff than I am (so if I can't do it...).

^^^

I agree on the QD issues. I think too many people use it as an "in between" wash as opposed to a touch up item. It's great for cleaning up water spots or spot cleaning after a wash, or even spot cleaning sap/bird bombs, but it's just not for a quick clean up of a dusty car. Unfortunately, dad does the dusty clean-up on his Black '87 911. :(

To WilliamHBonney: I have been to many shows and can tell you one thing many shows are somewhat rigged. Only some..I do not enter shows any more because of what I have seen behind closed door.:nono

So...True!:hmph:

btw what do you mean by "Import ricers!?" please give a good definitions because I see a lot of V8 owners doing the same and I do not label them as "domestic biscuits!"vice versa. I have a few good stories I have to say about v8 owners in Ca.

Should I break it to anybody who modifies car into these kind of catagories who road race?

German made: Kraut rockets?

American made: Biscuit rockets?

Italian made: pasta rockets?

Asian made: rice rockets?

British/ Asian made:?

Sorry to be off topic but It annoys me if anyone drives an Import and then classified as an "Import Ricer." Vice versa. Okay sorry for the rant.

Ok, now for the paint! Black paint needs more love than any other colors from my opinion. You are just going to have to except that it is going to get marred and swirled up. I have soft paint by the way and anything you swipe or touch across it ....It marrs.:sign

Interesting on the show information. I guess I would have thought that there would be more honor amongst the car shows.

As far as the comment ricer goes, Im not going to get into that debate because it was hashed out on here around 2-3 years ago, I should not have brought it up, that was my fault. What I meant was the stock Honda Civics et al with no mods and a 3 inch fart can and a wing the size of a jumbo jet on the back.

My post was not intended to beat up the import cars. The fact of the matter is there are stupid people everywhere, they don't necessarily drive imports. A few weeks back a guy in a green (may have been blown) pickup did a massive burnout on the WALKWAY of the Inn. It wasn't just a little smoke and go, he burned them up and then popped his foot off the brake with the other plastered to the floor and left some pretty long marks. Wouldn't have been much of an issue if there wasn't a mother walking with her kids right in front of the truck. Unfortunately for him, there was also a Park Officer sitting behind one of the buildings who saw the event unfold and pulled the his car out right in front of the truck; made the guy get out; and later handed him alot of paper from what I could tell. Now, I am young, I like burnouts, but there is a time and a place and these "stupid" people seem to get that all messed up. The reason I say the imports/ricers seem to do silly things is because they are all generally young, and because of the American Iron - Import rivalry they tend to be at more liberty to show off. But by no means is everyone who drives an import bad... Infact I have alot of respect for some of these guys who have mega bucks and even more time into some of these cars. And although I will ALWAYS roll with the american cars, I still respect the fact that there are many FASTER imports out there.

Now for the problem. I had a revelation after this who issue arose at Bear MT. First off I thought we were all car guys? Secondly, If I didn't show up to this show, and the guy next to me didn't either, and the guy next to him, and so on, how much entertainment for the spectators that they make hundreds of dollars off of, would there be? None, there wouldn't be a show, hence no spectators, and NO MONEY which is the real reason these scum bags put the shows on to begin with. If anything I think they should be treating everyone fairly, because if the new cars, and younger population didn't show, 1/2 the show would be gone! But even more importantly. When I was 16, I purchased with money I had saved for years, a 1971 Chevelle SS, with no help from my parents (who rather see me in a corolla). I used to get two types of responses, some people would give the thumbs up and others would say they liked my fathers car. Upon informing them it was mine they either, wouldn't believe it, ask me if I was old enough to drive, or tell me this is not a kids car. This is the reason I feel that the import scene is so big. It's almost like the older guys beat the youger ones up, and the youger ones say, "fu*K this" and move along to something that doesn't get that type of response, hence the hondas. I think the who Honda scene is people 30 and under, saying "Ill show you." And because potential has been found in these cars, the popularity has blown up. Meanwhile guys like myself who love the cars for the cars, get stuck dealing with the bull sh*t.

The funniest part about this whole situation is the same people who thumb there noses at the youger crowd and make negative coments towards those youger who own similar American vehicles, are really just trying to relive those younger years themselves... though there Camaro's TA's, Chevelles, and Cuda's.
