when microfibers scratch the paint - two part question

what do you guys do when you just polished out a panel perfectly and you go to wipe off the polish and your microfiber towel mars the finish? I had an issue on soft black paint where no matter which towel I used, I marred the otherwise perfect finish. costco towel, meguiars, and another name brand towel; all brand new, maybe used/washed once or twice



granted you had to practically be laying on the paint to see the marring, but I am picky like that...if someone is paying me an hourly rate to get things perfect, I want to make it as close to perfect as possible in all lights and angles...



question 2:



how many uses/washing do you get out of a single towel? When is it time to toss it? i usually toss them when they are too stained to come clean

First of all, any towel, new or used, could have contamination in it. Second, between "Costco, Meguiar's, and another name brand" doesn't guarantee you've got a towel that won't mar soft paint.
 
I have a bunch of the Supreme 530's from AG, and they mar my paint on my NHBP Civic. And that's after washing the towels. It's just the paint is super soft on my Civic, which I suspect is the case for you too.
 
yeah, so what do you do? just deal with it? it only happens on the really soft paints and typically black...toyota, bmw, honda...
 
One thing I've noticed with soft black paint (not that this is what's happening to you, but it has happened to me), is that I thought I was putting in straight line marring when I was wiping polish residue away, but I was actually just seeing the very faint remains of several rids/deep swirls. Sometimes even with polishes that go clean they'll be covered up until you wipe. Just a thought.



Of course it's more likely you're just putting some marring into soft paint that's been heated up. When I get that I usually leave the polish on for a minute, let the panel cool down, spritz with qd, then wipe.
 
Is it the polish/compound rubbing between the MF and paint? Or is it the MF itself?



If its that soft you could:



1) use ONR. Spray with ONR QD, then use ONR wash solution. But drying may cause a problem.



2) Power wash your last step finishing polish and do a wash and blow dry.
 
I've just learned to deal with it with my Civic. It is a daily driver and with soft paint, I've tried the softest approaches, etc, IPA wipedowns, ONR, I still instill marring with even super high quality MF towels. It's a fact of life. I just polish again about 9 to 12 months later, and it looks fine again.
 
Ive found that Eurow MF's are pretty good on super soft CC's, also a big thing is to make sure the finish is cool before wiping off the excess polish. The machine generates heat on the paint and the clear is softer just after polishing so wiping off polish then is more likely to cause marring.
