When it High GSM TOO High

Can we talk GSM ? Just short of a drying towel, where would you use a slighter shorter but much more denser towel like on a 16" footprint in the 800-1100 GSM ration.

As opposed to a slightly longer nap *may snag a bit or 2 on emblems*, but more the typical 480 Edgeless towels.

I never say a 800-1100 gsm detailing towel. My towels are in 6 categories:

1. Paint Safe (polish removal, Non-ruining LSP removal, Quick detailing, bird poop removal, wipe down with a waterless wash product)
2. Waterless wash towels (like a deeper nap towel such as Eurow Shag, MF Madness edgeless, Infiniti edgeless)
3. Lintless Glass Towels (used on nothing but glass, and washed only with other glass or drying towels)
4. Drying towels -I don`t like waffle weave towels no matter how soft, Never used one I liked. I like/prefer longer nap large MF towels. I generally dry with a masterblaster which removes 99.9%of the water and dry using these after. If the LSP is totally shot, the MB is not very effective so I use the towels and only blow out the retention and hard to dry areas.
5 Bug towels- Mesh but removal towels are a winner, Makes quick and easy work of bug removal. I own the same towels from several sources and its a great tool along with an APC or bug removal chemical. The key here is soaking the area good and lubrication.
6. Throw away towels. For dirty jobs and so dirty that I don`t want them in my washing machine, Even if I could get them clean, or for coating removal as some coatings ruins towels. You will know a towel is ruined if it gets stiff after coating removal. Generally the cheapest paint safe I can find fill this category. I just got a bunch of blue and yellow/green ones to replace the Chinese Junk ones I got fooled on. Sometimes you don`t know until you try them. Read more on this below.

I try not to spend a lot on towels by getting large quantities on sale when they are available. I buy a dozen of what I think I like, run them through the paces for a while and then invest big at a discount through a sale, coupon code, detail weekend or negotiation. That is why I just picked up some of the El Rey and Infiniti edgeless towels. I was needing to replace some to fit in to some high end detailing requirements I have and the existing towels I have, aged out of that standard for me. If they are good, I will buy more. The Microfiber madness are super nice, but expensive, even on sale. Its more than I ever would spend on a towel as its not so much better that others I have found for my use. I purchased some of the Infiniti edgeless microfiber towels that seem identical to the MF madness. Ill report back after I run them for a while because new towels can be deceiving. A few washes lets you know if you are onto something good or not.

My Poor boys DMTs are about 350-370 gsm ( I forget exactly what the GSM is and its not listed on their website) and they wear like Iron. I own some where between 150-200+ DMTs. I have used them since 2009 as my standard adding when on sale over the years. Yes they can pull on emblems but I think all towels can get caught on emblems. Its not a major problem with these, or any other towels I have had. Only the Junk short pile MF towels I used to use before the DMTs never get caught, because they have no nap-LOL. The majority of my DMTs are light green and the dirt can easily be seen so as to avoid swirling up my finish. The silk edge is great and has held up well. I am pretty sure these at Korean MF. They also have not shrunk at all after many washes.

Just recently purchased some 400 GSM El Rey Microfiber towels that feel really super nice and thick. At just about the same price as the DMTs, few cents more after the first time buyer discount. The increase in GSM of the El Rey Towels over the DMTs is very evident. In all fairness I have not seen the El Rey after washing yet, but I prewash all my towels before use, so I will report back shortly. My El Rey towels are Yellow and I like that I can see the dirt and specs on the towels easily so I don`t swirl up the paint. The Silk border looks well constructed, and the origin is also Korea which far outpaces Chinese MF for quality.

I purchased some cheap Chinese MF years ago and the 16" x 16" towels quickly went to 10" x 10" proving once again YGWYPF!!!!!!!!!!! They are now my throw away towels for exhaust and engine wipe downs, and I am almost through them. I recently purchased some cheap Korean MF to replace these for dirty jobs and I will let you know who that works out.

I cannot imagine a 800-1100 gsm towel allowing dirt or polish to move past the surface making removal unsafe and less than easy...but that`s just my guess as I have never seen such a dense towel. GSM is short for grams per square meter, and generally the higher the # the thicker and take longer to dry.

I`ve probably got more invested in towels than I do in polishers. One of my favorite "cheap" microfibers is the CGs yellow towel with the black band. I get them from Amazon. I like that they are plush on one side and short napped on the other. You never know what is going to work better to remove a polish or LSP, and the short nap works for coating removal and glass cleaning.

I have some super thick towels and all I find them good for is drying.

While I generally like long-nap MFs for washing and drying, I agree that MFs for such jobs can be too thick/heavy/plush for my taste.

I figure it`s a lot like household towels/washcloths...people who haven`t lived with *really* thick/heavy ones assume they`ve "just gotta be better!" But I`d suspect that people who`ve actually lived with them for a while often find out they`re not so great after all, at least not "across-the-board better for everything".

I do kinda like my batch of zillion-GSM washcloths, at least now and then. Wringing `em out can be good grip work :D But I bet that most people would quickly decide "not for me after all". OTOH, when it comes to detailing I *don`t* really like my few really high-GSM MFs (doubled white ones, forget where I got `em) all that much; I`d rather have longer nap in a lower GSM for washing/drying.

I have 1100 GSM towels from TRC. Great for drying - can dry our minivan with two 16 x 16 towels. But thats about it. Tried to use one the other day for a QD because my other towels were dirty and it did not go well.

For some reason I cannot edit my original post but the MF I just purchased are on a buy one get one 1/2 sale. Good for anyone wanting to buy, bad for me who already bought. Wonder if I can get a retro freebee? Missed it by that much lol.

I`m got about 8 of the Mfm edge less and about 2 dozen of the TRC edgeless. Love these for
a lot of uses but the snagging in d pillar moldings , etc is a given . I`d say it`s been maybe 3 years is my oldest ones - I feel like the long Nap in them make them fragile - I don`t wring these at all. I`ll squeeze them like a ball if I hand wash them. On the machine, I set it for low spin.

i noticed more than once, if I wrung it , a fiber or 2 always seemed to tear off...

I`m knee deep in MF`s. That is the one thing I cannot find a excuse to not stop buying. My selections have evolved over time but here goes

Drying : Griots PFM. My previous towel was MFM and also some double stitched yellow towel imported from Rubbish boys UK.
Blotting Towel: TRC 1100 and 800. Former towel wa DP Fluffy Monster *if I got the name right*.
Polish, QD: TRC/MFM Edgeless. Got me some Griots PFM wax towels I`ve yet to try on polish/sealant removal

Interiors,etc : Bunch of older CarPro Boa`s

Anyone else would agree the long nap medium GSM towels just don`t like hand wringing....

Sounds like your already a collector or some top MF cloths. If they are working keep with them. I wring all my towels edgeless or banded with no ill effects. At least so far. Up till now I only had a few. Not that I have more I`ll let you know.

I don`t know if he edgeless are

I wring all of of mine except for the MFM and TRC - 480-500`ish GSM long nap . I`ve never done it on my TRC as these are newer but from experience on my MFM, the 1st couple times I wrung them out, I noticed a fiber or 2 came off due to that. After the 2 or 3rd time noticing the same thing when I wrung it out, I make it a point to not wring them out at all, but just squeeze them like a ball..

Guys, yesterday I posted that I was asking for a retroactive promo since I missed it by a few days and I just got a response to my email from last night that I can get all the Microfibers at 50% off using a code CYBER. I though this was just for me, but I went to the site and its listed on their homepage for everyone on Cyber Monday on all chemicals and microfibers. It does not say if its only for today or not, I cannot imagine I can go for too long. I may be thrown out of my house but I like the towels I just purchased enough that I am getting MORE of both of them ! :) . I gotta stop already.

Now if PA goes on a 50% off sale I`ll be all set-HINT HINT.

Huh, surprised that people do so much wringing...when mine get that saturated no amount of wringing out will get them dry enough to work well for me so I just get out a fresh one.

I don`t wring during use.
All towels get washed after use. Don`t like to leave stuff behind.
If I have 2 or 3 towels I have used and don`t want to run the machine, I handwash them. Hence the wringing...

I have some 1100gsm TRC`s. Nice for wax removal but so thick and plush, they`re a bit hard to handle. I have big hands and they still cramp up.

The most expensive highest gsm towel I use is the Chinese 420 gsm TRC Creature Edgeless towels at $1.75 a piece. They are all I use for D114 rinseless washing and D115 waterless washing. I also using them for all of my drying needs. For detail spray/spray wax I like the lower GSM TRC 365 edgeless (also Chinese)......for polish removal nothing is more effective than TRC 300 gsm edgeless (Chinese), and for glass and interior work my WORKHORSE towel is the TRC 245 edgeless chinese towels. The low nap makes them incredible at scrubbing and they always stay soft wash after washing. I buy each of these towels in bulk and use/wash them according so I don`t cross contaminate my interior towels and my rinseless towels. I love them all. Some of them I`ve washed probably 30 times and they still perform like new. For me, I`d rather use an EDGELESS 300 gsm chinese towel and get microscopic scratches that i can`t even see on soft black paint than deal with the linting associated with all the 580gsm or greater Korean towels on the market.

Just a quick update....

So it`s late fall, windy, lotsa stuff in the gravel, etc.
Don`t really blow dry the cars inside the garage...
Was concerned about possible blowby of minute crap in the gravel....even though the perimeter was wet

I blot leftover water with either a 480 edgeless or a water sucking 1100gsm 16x16

I tried a new method today and I quite like it. I used 4 20x40 480`ish GSM towels. Just laid them on the hood and roof, etc. No dragging required due to the qty of towels used. Made quick work on the verts as well. The DIFFERENCE compared to the PWM was it was much nimbler on the verticals, due to the towel being 1/2 the density...

Slight added bonus points - as least In my eyes. These towels are white...easier to spot check debris whereas the latter is grey. Semantics I suppose. I swear, no more MF purchases for the next 365 days !
