when is masking trim recommended?

I thought I'd ask a question since this thread relates closely to what I am asking. On some of the videos demonstrations.... they have different sections of the car taped off..What is the purpose of this?

I suspect they do it so they can show dramatic before/after pictures.

Another newby here.. I've seen some guys in Autopia also tape the gaps between panels - why you do that? Is it just to prevent the residue and dust getting inside the gaps? Or something else I don't know? And if you tape the gaps, the edges of the panels will result not polished because they were covered with the tape, how come?

Sorry if I sound stupid...

No, no, not a dumb Q at all!

The residue can be one reason. Sometimes residue can be a real PIA to clean out of those nooks and crannies.

But it also helps protect the edges where the paint might be thinner and where the pad could hit it aggressively, sometimes taking things down to primer or metal quicker than you'd ever imagine.

Yeah, the covered areas need extra, subsequent attention, but it's nice to not have to worry about then when doing the lion's share of the work.

Well, I earlier suspected that could be the reason, thanks for explaining ;)

And when you finish polishing, after peeling the tape off, how you treat the "former-covered" areas? By hand or there is any special technique?

Either by hand or with a machine being very careful regarding high edges and amount of product. Sometimes I'll tape one panel while working the edge of the other one from a certain angle and then repeat the process for the other one.
