when did you get hooked in cleaning your car

Who says I'm hooked?

Please wipe your feet before you get in - thanks.

Oh, never mind, we can't go now...the car is clean and it just started raining.

Back in June I came to the end of my 3rd, 3 year lease deal and was about to lease another when I saw this slightly used fleet SUV that was a sweet deal. So I BOUGHT IT.

...And even though it's my daily driver, this ride still looks like it just came off the factory floor.

I'm in real deep now with a few shelves full of car care products, including a PC with assorted pads, polishes and compounds. My efforts spilled over onto my wife's car, then to her mother's - who knows where this OCD ends?!

Oh yea, I came across this site after googling 'auto detailing' to get more "in-the-know" about detailing. I'm thinking I'll stick around awhile!

I've been obsessed with cars since I was a wee lad. I wouldnt be suprised if my very first word actually was Corvette. Anyway, when I was 14 my dad was trading his 89 Lincoln Continental in for a Brand new 1994 Impala SS. When I saw the pala, I was totally hooked. He test drove the Bonneville SSEi as well as the Chrysler LHS of that model year, and when he FINALLY found a dealer that would let him drive the SS....his mind was made. He ended up getting it from a dealer other than the one he test drove it at (due to a service type issue) but I was the first to drive it. 14 years old and Dad let me take it out of the little garage area it was parked. I went with my dad to the dealer EVERY time he went throughout the purchasing process.

Long story short, I started waxing the pala about every month! I dont really remember what all the products I used were, but I can remember how thick I put the wax on. Talk about removal issues. I must have used half a bottle on that thing the first time I ever waxed it, but oh, the sweet satisfaction of when I was done kept me coming back for more. :D

Memories...

I had a friend who drove a BMW 5 series to work everyday, and it was always spotless. If it rained, the car was perfect the next day. A few years later I said I was going to keep my vehicles clean, and that BMW was my inspiration.

I started out with whatever looked good at the auto parts store and liked Zymol. Then the internet came along, and I moved to Meguiar's -- that Car Care Prescription really set the tone. Then I discovered Autopia and the Detailing Guide ebook and used P21S products. My son picked up the bug from me, and starting using Zaino on his black Acura TL. I tried Zaino, discovered forums like this, and now I'm a hopeless fanatic.

My first detaling job was 20 years ago. A 1985 black Maxima that had never been waxed or washed properly. I baby`d that thing starting on the inside and moving to the outside. At the time, I used cooking oil to remove tar and dirt that did not come out in the wash and then waxed it with the best turtle wax I could find with nothing but the instructions on the can to guide me...boy I have come a long way since then ;)
