Why is it that some people say to cover the entire car with polish then buff it off after it sits for 20 minutes or so? Does that actually work or is that a crock? I've heard that by letting the polish sit, you are letting the polish do all the work, but it seems that all I have read here (and all I have ever done) was buff as I go, doing sections at a time. Is letting the polish sit safe and beneficial?
 
Guess my Name is correct. It all depends on the polish. The very same thing goes for waxes or sealants. With some it is recommended to let them sit for a few minutes or an hour. With others you simply apply then buff out.



So quite simply, you need to be more specific with regards to the polish. Laters
 
I've heard about that for different polishes, but I was mainly concerned with the Meguiar's #7. The instructions say to buff as you go, but I have read about people who let "the polish do all the work" by letting it sit for 30 minutes.
 
The only "work" that can be done by a polish just setting on the surface is for it's solvents to eat away at the underlying surface. There is do advantage, and many disadvantages, to spreading polish to the whole car first. One of the disadvantages is that when the moisture and lubrication evaporates out of the polish it can cause scratches when you try to rub it into the surface.



Spread it as you go.
