i have some scratches that seem to be just clear coat and before i klasse i want to do as much as possible to fix. i was wondering what's the next harshest step from SMR (i mean more harsh). i dont want to do anything drastic. i just got my PC so i figure it'd be a good time to work the scratches out if possible. i know go from lightest abrasive to harshest, but i def think that SMR isnt enough. thanks.

If you're using 3M then it's Finesse-It II Machine Polish.

If you're using Meguiar's do a search for "meguiars" and "carguy". He posted an unofficial ranking of aggressiveness for Meguiar's polishes.

Yeah, Carguys list was quite helpful. Just FYI, SMR (or #9) are very mild, and likely won't get out many swirls at all. When I used it on my dad's Maxima a few weeks ago it brought back some gloss, but didn't touch the swirls much at all. SO I'll be picking up some FI II soon to try again...

I would add that I THINK 3M SMR is more aggressive than Meguiars' #2 - and that you should try either at least twice before deciding you need something harsher - i.e., apply once and work it until it disappears, then do it again over the same spot. But if that doesn't work, FI-II is great stuff. Remember to work the heck out it as well - or you'll be left with major hazing. As you work it (by orbital) the abrasives will slowly diminish in particle size until it becomes a polish and really bring the gloss back. If/when you stop before this, you get haze.
