Whats the difference between coated & uncoated leather?

Coated leather has a coating on it to help protect it from oils in your skin, dirt, etc. If you put a drop of water on the leather and it doesn't get absorbed, it's coated leather. If the drop of water starts to get absorbed, it's uncoated leather. Uncoated (or natural) leather usually isn't seen until you start getting into higher-end luxury cars.

The coating does much more than just protect the leather. If you saw the raw layer of leather prior to coating you would throw it out. The coating adds uniform grain patterns, hides scars and blemishes and provides consistent color and protection.

Coated leather does not absorb water. Most uncoated leathers also do not easily absorb water as they are usually treated with a wax after the tanning process.

Coated leathers are also known as semi-analine leathers or protected leathers sometimes just noted as "P" leathers. Uncoated leathers are called analine or "A" leathers.

To tell which you have you should scratch an area of the leather in an inconspicuous area. If it turns lighter when scratched it is probably analine (uncoated). You can also wet your finger and briskly rub an area. If the leather darkens it is likely analine (uncoated).
