What to wash with between SG layers?

What car wash is safe to use between layers of SG. The car is my daily driver and I want to build up a few layers before winter. I will need to wash in between coats but I know most have some wax in them that might affect the bonding of SG. What should I use?

Why not drop an e-mail to the people that make SG and ask .. they will have the correct answer. If SG is like Zaino you can wash it with anything and then prior to the next coat Dawn wash it. Dawn won't remove Zaino.

Gold Class is the locally available answer. *I* prefer Griot's Car Wash myself, but unless the label makes a big deal out of "containing wax" you'll be fine with whatever you'd normally use. I don't think you'd need to use Dawn, and since it's a little harsh on rubber, etc. I'd avoid it when it's not really necessary.

Please don't Dawn wash between Klasse or Zaino layers! I don't know how this dang Dawn-wash craze started, but it's entirely over-rated. Use Dawn when you need an aggressive wash to remove wax/oils/fillers. Do not use it between Klasse or Zaino layers otherwise. <head in hands>

I was suggesting Dawn as a last wash if they were washing with unknowns that may put waxes on the surface in inhibit the bonding of the klasse. Some wash soaps DO incorporate carnubas. In a conversation with Sal Zaino himself I asked basically the same question. As I wash 3 times a week in the summer I wasn't prepared to use thier expensive soap so I called and asked the Q. Answer was .. some washes contain oils and waxes and if I wasn't using their product to Dawn wash before I continued with more Zaino/ZFX.

Not one of the other postings answered his question.. they just stated what they use/like. Thus possibly leading him down the garden path.

That is why I suggested they contact the Klasse people for advise so someone "didn't" lead them down the garden path.

Jesstzn, now that you've offered that additional info, I understand what you mean. But I still would not use Dawn unless it's absolutely required. Dawn is a very harsh alkaline cleaner which will degrade rubber/viny components, and really should only be used as a last resort, IMO. I just worry that newcomers here get a bad, mistaken impression that Dawn is some sort of cure-all.

I'm pretty sure most car washes that don't say they contain carnauba will work perfectly fine.

Pretty much all shampoos contain some extra ingredients, and even the ones that contain carnauba don't have that much wax in it. I'd just pick a normal car wash and not worry too much.

Perhaps my post was somehow misconstrued. I thought my recommendation DID answer his question. I'll rephrase/clarify.

IMO, you should use Griot's Car Wash. It gives GREAT results when washing between coats of SG. It cleans the surface well, leaves no residue, and does NOT cause any bonding issues with SG or any other product I've ever used. I have used Griot's Car Wash between to wash between layers of SG for years. It works. I also know that plenty of people use Gold Class. It works fine too, as does P21S.

There are three specific recommendations that are time-tested and well-proven.

If there's a concern about "extra" contamination, you can just clay while washing.

I suspect that contacting the Klasse people would merely result in a recommendation to use THEIR shampoo (Sonus, right? I forget), which is just another path through the garden- one that would profit them. Like asking ANY manufacturer what brand of product you should use. It might be an intersting conversation to hear about though.

Yes I read your original posting wrong .. the *I* inserted in it and the various other postings in this thread and the tendency in a lot of these threads to vary from answering the questiion asked to things like " I use THIS and throwing QD spray comments in with it" and straying off into arguments on who got the best price where etc. lead me to read it that way.

BTW as far as how the Klasse people would react to a call ..I don't know .. they might recommend their own ( naturally) but they might also give a few to stay away from and ones that are ok. I was expecting this from Zaino too but was suprised when they said use what I like ( not use ONLY Z7) but just Dawn wash prior to the next Z2/ZFX. BTW Has someone actually tested the impact of Dilluted Dawn sitting on rubber for 15 seconds?

The other point I have to make here is I think a lot of the people are looking for solutions to problem that they can solve economically and locally and there seems to be a tendency not only here but in many forums to give people solutions that have to be ordered online and are in the upper $$$ range. Good example is the Groits Garage and the P21S and the Pinnacle products. I am by no means poor and $60 US ( $100 Can ) for a suggested wax is more that some can handle.

Your secong posting for your reason for using Griots Wash was perfect. clear and to the point. As far as the "I have heard part" I prefer to offer through experience.

Flame on .. I'm ducking ...

Looks like you just proved your point. :D

Someone stated that they use P21S total auto wash between layers of polymers, SG I think, I hope they meant P21S bodywork shampoo.

My understanding is that P21S total auto wash removes almost anything from paint, oils, fillers, waxes etc. Try it and you will feel a wax free clean surface that will not bead water, no matter if Zaino or anything is on there. I've used this stuff to strip Zaino off and it worked awesome!

Now the bodywork shampoo is obviously safe for waxes etc.
