I think its personal preferences for a persons setup.
I own a PC. I have a 6", 4.5", and a 3.5" backing plate. I have settled on polishing with 4" LC CCS pads (white and green) on a 3.5" BP. I then wax using a 6.5" pad on a 6" BP.
I was thinking if I get any more aggressive with my pads (orange), I would probably move up to 5" to help cut down on my potential damage factor as I continue to learn as I feel a 4" might be too aggressive. I would use my 4.5" (which might really be 4.75) BP.
The extra pad overhang is a nice buffer to ensure you don't hit the backing plate on the paint and cause damage. The pad over hang kinda curls in towards the backing plate a bit. But beware if the overhang gets caught on something it can curl and the back of the pad could be rubbing against your paint. The did happen to me once.
So far I try to keep my BP just a bit smaller then the pads I plan on using.
