What Rotary Should I Get?

Most pneumatics have a nob or lever for speed adjusment just like an electric. They even make some specificly for auto work. I've used em plenty and they seem to run real close to the same speed when set right. My milwaukee can go 3000 rpm *shrug*

I was expecting my HF rotary today but unfortunately, it was not delivered. I hope it doesn't sound as bad as you make it out though. Do you have anything to compare it to, or are you comparing the noise level to the PC?

BUMP !

I've decided on getting the makita. I ordered it last night. I just couldn't justify that much extra cost for a machine that was only marginally better. For the price of just the metabo I can get not only the makita rotary, but also a full set of pads for it.

I also like the fact that the makita rotary comes with a dedicated carrying case, wool pads, and a backing plate. I'm not quite sure what kind of quality the pads and plate are but I like the carrying bag a lot. If anyone could enlighten me on the quality of the pads and backing plate that come with the makita I would be most appreciative. I know they won't be a good as something I order, but I'd like to know if I can use them safely on my paint.

Thanks, Mark

Good for you tubafreak. I've been trying to decide if I should hit the rotary step this summer, so with alot of research I'm sure everyone will tell you to get a good backing plate and pads. I would stay away from that wool pad. Moded Urethane bp seems the best since it decreases heat transfer from the rotary to the pad.

Gah rotary or not...

I'll give you guys some info from a retail standpoint. I work part time at an auto paint store. We sell ALL of the forementioned rotarys at our store. We sell the most of the ATC or a rebadged model that looks like the one from HF. We sell approx 5 times more of the ATC's than the next best seller the Dewalt. We have only had 1 return out of 200 sold. And yes they are used in a production shops. The mikita is the least reliable with 1 out of 5 coming back for brushes or various different repairs. I know that everyone here has one of these buffers and have had good luck with them, I'm responding on what I have seen from a larger scale. The cheaper buffers only down fall is that I dont think it has a variable trigger. The 180$ savings will buy a heck of a lot of pads and compound..LOL

I've already ordered the makita. What finally pushed me to it was when I was watching the meguiars defect removal video online (Video ) and they use makitas. I figure that Meguiars knows a little about car care, and it looks like replacing a brush is just a screw-in, screw-out affair.

As for the pads, I will be using 6.5" LC pads with a nice 5" BP until I decide that I'm good enough at rotary to warrant a dedicated set of pads. I can still use the pads that come with it to find out the limits of the rotary, I can use the Honda as a test-bed.
