Or do you just use paper receipts? I'm getting ready to add a Laptop in the back of my setup once I FINISH the floors as I didn't have a chance to do today got 3 calls all for Deluxe Waxes which are $50.00 so that was a quick $150 today and made $37 in tips. All referred by the ladies at Washington Mutal where I did my first 5 Jobs.

Not a bad day. Got my first call as I was going on to take everything out about 7:30am.

I'm thinking about getting quickbooks but wanted to see what you guys were using. Just trying to look as professional as possible.

Thanks

Quickbooks is great! My wife does the accounting for a few small businesses in our area, and she uses that. We also use it for our own businesses and our personal finances, and it's quite easy to learn and use, and it has just about everything you'd ever need for keeping your finances in order. The only drawback is the cost. At 250+ for the QB Pro, it's a bit pricey, but personally, I think it's worth it.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Do you think the basic/standard edition would be ok? Or is it alot left out?

The standard would probably be fine for what you're going to use it for. The Pro version has a lot of options for payroll, forecasting and planning inventory, setting up shipping accounts, and other things that would be suited for a manufacturing type of company. These are things that you could probably make use of if you had them, but you could run your business without them.

Well do they allow discounts for upgrades? Or is it the full price if you know sorry for all the questions.

Quick books basic will do the job. Thats what I use and I love it. You can create your own layout or use the templates it provides. Also it has a few good features, such as basic accounting, customer info, ( quick link to find out what you did last for the customer. I find alot of my customers say I loved what you did last time, so do it again and thats all they say). and Account balances, great feature for tracking your fleet accounts.

I'm not sure, but I think you can add the upgrades. If you or someone you know is enrolled in college or some other secondary education, you can usually buy software at the "education" price. When my wife was going to school, we bought a full version of Photoshop for a fraction of the cost. You can either go through the school's bookstore, or I found mine online at Ebay. I had to fax them proof or registration (student ID, etc) and they shipped immediately. I don't know if this is the case with all educational software, but as far as I can tell, there isn't any difference between the one I bought and the store bought version.

It all depends on how much you know about accounting. Im an accounting major so i have had some experiance with a few. If you are clusless i really like the quick books. However if you know what a chart of accounts, and afew statements are I would use simply accounting. I like the set up and how you can choose the account system. Also if you get it use a cash basis much easier (not to sound technical but ya)

What do you me "use a cash basis'?

There are 2 types of Gaap(general accepted accounting practicesO accounting procedures which must be followed. Cash basis is when you recored new "stuff" as an asset and as you use it you write it off the books, there is also an Acrule basis wich is much more complicated but works better on a larger scale, and when using diffrent inventory systems. For somthing like detailing a cash basis would be what you want. This would be when you recored new supllies as assets and as you use them the become expenses.

Ok I understand. Wow I see you know quite a bit about accounting. What do you think about Peachtree Accounting Program? If you've ever seen it.

I havent seen it now sorry. I have only taken one computer accuting course as we do it with either a pen and paper of microsoft excell. Im sure its a good program. I would suggest finding somehitn you like. or maybe finding an accountant to do the books. Im sure you could find a CGA( in canada) equzilent or even a book keeper that could do it for like 50 bucks a month. or go to a universty and get a student to do it. I know its a far fetched idea but u know there being done right and to the goverment standards. Its what buisness taxs are based on.

I just brough quickbooks Simple Start, I must say very nice now I just have to get a laptop for on the go.

Right now I use Word for big client receipts/bills, and a dollar store book for walk-ins. I use Excel with Tax specified categories for separate income & outgo sheets, and then a year end. None of this is helpful, simple or integrated. :(
