what model rotary are you using? what are some special features, that you like? weigh, size, grip, speed setting, durability, ect?

i am interested in buying one, and would like to here about everyone choice of rotary and why they choose it.

I've used Makita, Milwaukee, and Vector. I'll break it down like this:

Milwaukee

Pros - Very stout motor, Durability (Thing's built like a tank)

Cons - Too bad it weighs almost as much as a tank, Expensive

Makita 9227c

Pros - Light weight, Easy to control, Settings dial, put together very well, wide speed range (600 rpm - 3000 rpm)

Cons - No information on the notches between the numbers on the speed dial.

Vector Polisher

Pros - Light weight, easy to use, price

Cons - Can't think of any at the moment

Makita 9227c also.

About your cons, I usually refer to the chart on the back and feel the best RPM in between the notches.

I absolutely love it!

Dewalt 849 - Smoooooth operation and very well built machine. You should pick up a few junk panels to learn how to use it. I didn't and learned the hard way: Burned off clear coat, removed paint from plastic trim, blew off a windshield wiper. These were all very valuable lessons, but I wish that I'd learned them on a throw away vs. on my own cars. Once you learn how to use a rotary, you'll REALLY like it. They are very safe once you learn how to operate.

It's an awesome machine. I am a light-duty user and this unit will only be used a few times per year. Like my other Makita tools, I expect to have many years of excellent functionality from it. The gradual speed start up is cool and the auto speed control is real benefit.

I have lent it to a few other people. They have been amazed by it. It's a quality tool.

DeWalt DW849

Does what it is supposed to do and does it well.

I would probably be happy with any of the aformentioned rotaries though.

The Makita 9227c, was what i had in mind. This machine comes with both round top bar handle, and side handle, correct? So you could choose whatever you feel more comfortable with. i know makita makes quality tools, i'm a carpenter, and i've used there circular saws, drills and many other tools. i also like some hitachi, dewalt, and bostch stuff too. but for some reason the Makita 9227c draws my eye, and just looks very comfortable, and reasonably priced.
