What makes you think you’re a great Detailer?

Almost hesitant to even post on this thread, and honestly not sure how it is relevant in the professional forum. Being great at anything is how you are judged by other people. Michael Jordan was great because the world judged him to be so. Muhammad Ali was great because that is what the world thought. I feel I am a very knowledgeable and competent business owner and auto detailer. My years of experience doing this part time and full time, are my qualifications; as is my business success up to this point. I have made many customer's happy and that is what is important to me. If they perceive me to be "great", than that is the ultimate judgment.

Well with great replies from guys like Rasky, I don't think there's much more for me to add. I feel I continuously try to out-do myself, always learning, always working hard.

A "Great" detailer is one who stays in business, despite the economy. Looking on the "General Discussion" part of this forum was a question on what it would take to become a "professional detailer". I think David Fermanni stated that for every 20 detailers that start out with this intent, 19 give up. I have stated this over and over that detailing is a SKILL that requires a proper understanding of today's vehicles surfaces (paints and clearcoat technologies), application of car-care chemicals, and techniques in using car-car tools. All of these require a committment to learn and apply along with a cetain amount of ability.

If you can make a living at detailing, and have for some time, you're "great" in my eyes. If you have PAYING customers who keep coming back or bring their friends and associates to you to detail their vehicles, you're "great" in my eyes.

But what REALLY makes a "great" detailer is the passion they have for detailing. Maybe it is the obsessive-compulsive detailing "disease" (OCD), but it is something they love to do. For those who are in it for the money, they're the 19 who quit. The truely "great" detailers are those I find on this forum who take the time to post their (own!) pictures and processes and are an inspiration to me. Like Yogi Berra said, "It ain't braggin' if ya can do it!"
