What kind of detailing do you like to do?

Does anyone know if there is a difference in windshield glass. Mine has to be replaced. I spoke to one glass company and he mentioned dealer glass and that if I wanted dealer glass it had to be approved by my insurance company. I asked ,whats the difference between dealer glass and what you put in and he said there is no difference except that was made for the dealer with a certain mark on it. I am wondering if they put in a cheaper grade if its not dealer glass? I live in Florida and insurance companies pay for the windshield glass with no deductible. Anyone shed some light on this.

I believe there are Government standards for Windshields for saftey laminated glass. I would bet the fit is the biggest concern for the non OEM approved glass.

Ask your insurance Co.

The story from the glass company is:

The dealer glass is if the car is under warrantee, the dealer will not cover the glass if it breaks , if its not there brand name.

I then called my insurance company and they said the glass is no different except for the name on it. At this point I am covered at both ends.

I'd go with the dealer OEM glass if you are paying the same deductible and your insurance company approves it. I just had my Lexus windshield replaced 2 weeks ago and I had the option to take it to a dealer or a third party installer. I went with the dealer instead. I know that they had to use a third party installer but they did use OEM glass and the work is warrantied. I am happy with the results.

Also, 2 years ago, I had my Honda windshield replaced and it was done by one of those independent windshield glass installers. I am not too happy since the glass had some optical distortions on the lower passenger side . This is why I'd rather go with the original part if possible.

I am cleaning up my wife's old car for resale, and have to say that I am having WAY more fun then I would doing my normal, long, drawn-out, details.

The turn around is much more dramatic. On a near perfect car it takes hours and hours to make it 10 percent better, but with this, it only takes minutes to get the same amount of improvement.

and i thought it was me.... i like seeing the difference i've made with really abused paint. the reward seems so much more gratifying

Personal favorite is doing a relatively clean car that only needs some gentle finishing polishing.:-c (using that smiley cuz its new and awesome, also I am not sure if its a "hang ten brah" or a "call me")

As for the dislike, um, 20hr. paint corrections fit in that category...

as I meander off to work on a black LS460 L which is hacked :banghead:

:iagree:David states it best!!!! Amen.

I also dislike trashed mini-vans and SUV's.

My favorites have to be Corvettes and Classic Muscle Cars, no matter what condition! I just have a PASSION for those cars!

I love cleaning up work trucks.

Not so much paint polishing involved.

More like 2hr pressure and foam gun washes, claying, and sealing.

My personal favorites are the good ole Z71s.

Believe it or not, I detail as a form of relaxation. I can spend an entire day detailing one of our vehicles from top to bottom and inside and out. I've been doing this for 40 years and as time progressed my skills and ability have progressed along with it.

Generally speaking my vehicles are in pretty decent shape. This is my 1999 Dodge Dakota that I've owned since new. I detailed a week or so ago, not bad for 11 years old.

I've done some relics through the years that when I got done with them I didn't know what or who actually won but they looked great in the end!

I've never detailed for income but more for the enjoyment of turning an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. It also got me lots of tools and detailing products!!

Nick... you're a truck specialist! I'm sending all my truck customers to you!!!

Thanks Bill, LOL.

I would send you a couple Corvettes your way but I hardly ever do any.

I like doing trucks a lot better so it works out.

I tend to like anything with paint correction. I find a lot of joy in that. I used to enjoy the LSP step a LOT, now I want the LSP done quickly cuz I have more fun with correction. I'm sure in a year or two I may favor a different step tho.

I love doing drastic turnarounds, and depending on the car, they could be 5hr or 25hr jobs. I just LOVE doing the ones that leave people saying: "theres no way thats the same car".

Since I moved into an apartment I no longer have access to an individual garage, so I haven't been doing much machine polishing lately. I've had to move on to interior detailing and I find it to be very enjoyable too. It doesn't require specialized power tools (I'd love to have a compressor and a tornador tho) and it requires a lot of concentration and attention to detail. I've also found that people who don't give a s*it about their cars appreciate interior turnarounds more than exterior jobs. I saw that when I did a full interior and exterior detail on my mom's car's for the first time. I had to show her around the exterior and actually educate her on paint correction and on what were the areas that I had improved, but when she sat on the drivers seat she instantly noticed the improvement and she appreciated it more than what I did on the paint.

When looking at other people's work at detailing forums, I love seeing full corrections done on daily drivers. Ferraris and Bentleys are cool, but there's nothing like a good write up on a job done on a 10-year Corolla. :)

I find wash and wax type deails to boring to be honest. I enjoy a full blown out detail. I am waiting for the day someone ask's me to remove the entire front clip to clean the motor. My favorite part of detailing is wetsanding. I enjoy that more then anything.

I prefer cars since my back has a limit on how long it will work without reminding me about my disc issues. That said, I like the daily drivers where they don't go to the tunnel of swirls or try to wash with a gritty old mitt. I got plenty of chemicals for dirt, grease, grim etc. and a stout powerwasher. I've stated to really get into interiors - like someone said - most folks notice that over paint. I like customers that appreciate my work and don't just pay and run.

Like JuneBug, my back comes into play for me. Having had 4 back surgeries and not finished with them, I hate working on medium to large SUV's and trucks. All the up/down on a step stool/ladder reeks havoc on my back.

I also dislike interior work. Most people that come through my shop care far more about the interior than the exterior. While certain cars' interiors I don't mind (dependent upon the quality of the materials), I'm over them, especially when it comes to interior glass. If I never had to do another interior job, I'd be just fine.

All that said, I enjoy exterior detailing the most. If I had an ideal size, I'd pick a mid-size cars or compact/small SUV's since neither are so small that they require a lot of bending over but also not so big that there's a lot of need for a step stool.

I'm with Barry, wet sanding and leveling paint is probably my favorite thing to do. Honestly though, as long as I'm not pressed for time it really doesn't matter what kind of detailing I'm doing. I simply love when a customer drops off the car and says take as long as you need. :)
