What kind of clay do you use and why that brand?

Ive used Meguiars blue mild... the yellow bar from a Zaino kit... and Im currently using Pinnacle Poly Clay. I really like the Poly Clay but it seems they are replacing it with their Ultra Poly Clay?



Is Ultra Poly Clay going to be ok for doing customers cars? They say it doesnt remove wax or current surface protection... dont you want your clay to at least remove some of that while prepping for polish?



Has anyone used Sonus Ultra Fine? Any good?



Im curious... we all pay a crazy amount of $ for a small piece of clay... what kind do you prefer?



Is there anywhere to buy clay in bulk?

I like Clay Magic because it is more agressive than the yellow clays IME and I always polish after clay anyway.
 
I really like the Clearkote purple/medium clay for general use. You can get a huge bar that lasts forever at a very reasonable price. I think this is the same company that makes the Mother's clays, and is marketed under several labels.



I use the Pinnacle poly clay (yellow) for my garage queens, just because its not very aggressive and they don't need it.



Depending on my needs, I generally use Meg's QD as a lube, or the Pinnacle clay lube. I like the Meg's because its cheap and cleanses well. However, its not sun friendly, so I sometimes rinse or do a light rewash.
 
I just did a search... yeah I know I shouldve done that first. :) I found on the Danase site that they are selling Sonus Medium Grey 100 gram in a six pack, 600 grams, for $47.95.



Ive decided to give that a try and save the couple bars of Pinnacle Poly for my own rigs. :)
 
out of the few brands that I have tried (meg's smooth, mothers, clay magic blue) I really like clay magic the best. It seems to have a tad more "bite to it" for use on contaminated vehicles that have never really seen a proper detail. Now, for a car that I keep well maintained....I would probably use one of the less aggressive clays once a year.
 
I REALLY like sonus green clay. Very gentle, even moreso than Clay Magic Blue and Mothers. Won't strip most LSPs, so I use it exclusively between major (i.e. spring and fall) details to touch up anything that might have attached itself to the paint. Otherwise, I'll use sonus grey or Clay Magic Blue, they both work well for me.

I just picked up some more Clay Magic blue from Auto Zone tonight. I like it because it's available at the auto part store and I think it's pretty good for the price. I have used Adam's clay before and I really liked that as well.
 
I have used the Adams clay and liked it.

I am currently using Poorboys Clay for my customers' cars.

Why, cause it works good..



I will be trying out Car Brites clay in the next month or so...
 
I've been using Clay Magic for 15 years and it never disappoints me. I haven't tried too many other clays, but Clay Magic (blue) doesn't ever marr the paint or remove wax. Very safe and effective.
 
I use the blue bar Clay Magic, it's the first clay I've ever tried, but I'll probably stick with it unless I try out a few Sonus bars. I really like that it's abrasive level is just right to where I don't have to worry about marring the paint because it's so rough, but so far it's been able to remove anything I need it to. The best part about it though is that I can pick it up for 10 bucks at Autozone anytime I need it.
 
Claymagic was my 1st,then poorboy,Megs agressive, and the white clay from the new megs kit when i need a less aggressive clay.
 
Thanks for the posts guys... it has convinced me to try Clay Magic next. :)



For $10 at Autozone I may go grab some tomorrow just for the hell of it... try it out on a Bimmer Im doing on Friday.
 
I've tried Mothers and Meguiars after using Clay Magic. None of them was as good as the Blue Clay Magic so I've stayed with that.
 
Werkstatt prep clay (same grade as clay magic blue , only easier to knead and doesn't go like concrete when cold)



Sonus Ultra fine - the ultimate frequent use clay.
 
Another blue clay magic user here...fairly cheap, available locally, and excellent performance. I do want to try the "ultra fine" type clays in the near future.

Same here, I use it to spot-clay at every wash. If it strips your LSP you're either doing something wrong or the LSP was dead anyhow. It's so mild I end up needing the Sonus gray for many jobs.



Direct comparisons with Griot's and Mother's (which appear to be identical) showed that the Sonus gray is markedly superior- better cleaning, less residue. But some (e.g. RAG, IIRC) have had it cause light marring when they got aggressive with it (never happened for me though).
 
Clay Magic cause I can wake up drive down to the Autozone pick it up and run back home in 15 minutes. Its not a half bad clay either :chuckle:
 
Currently have/used Optimums Clay worked great and I love it, unfortunatly it's no longer available :( so back to clay magic with this is done......
