What is your FAVORITE wheel tools.....

i don't get the fascination with ez/daytona brushes either. i got one and used it twice. getting speckled with wheel cleaner mixed with brake dust just wasn't going to work for me.

+1. The guaranteed sling from pulling it out of the wheels is just one more check in the CONS column.

2 Blasts from the past Brad B.

EF HI was my 1st auto APC..

Yeah, I still like that stuff. Had a gallon jug of it spring a leak yesterday..at least that part of the shop floor is now nice and clean :o Glad it didn't happen up in the storage closet with its hardwood floor!

Thanks for the reminder. I need to use my new wheel woolies.

Typical tools:

  • Mothers Tire brush
  • Mothers wheel brush
  • Daytona bristle brush
  • Retired from paint use wool mitt
  • Lug nut cleaner
  • Long and short brush for wells
  • sponge

I just use old MF's and one lugnut boar's hair brush, if the barrels are in bad shape I just jack it up and take each well off. of course always torque the lugs to spec when doing this and always use jack stands.

Well I just got from Autogeek the EZ Detail Brush, Mini EZ detail brush, Woolie Brushes and the Cleaner Wheel Brush and will be trying them out hoping tonight.

I'm a huge fan of the wheel woolies also. A 2 inch horsehair sash brush, tape around the ferrule, is also always close by.

The EZ Detail brush is reserved for the engine compartment, not the wheels. The extraction sling drives me nuts and you'd think I'd learn to extract it slowly. Nope.

The wheel woolies are great though, possibly the second greatest invention ever invented by man, just a close second behind Pizza and beer.

Ok, maybe the third greatest invention ever.

John you can basically kill the foam with your EZ brush by just putting an ounce of shampoo in your wheel bucket, blasting it into foam with some solution and then doing your regular cleaning. I use it like this all the time and splatter is an absolutely minimum now.

Mini foam brush

Bottle cleaner

Foam brick

Wheel and tire mitt (Haven't seen too many around, it's a mitt with short bristles, amazing to remove stubborn brake dust)

Wheel and fender brush

I'm currently using a mothers wheel brush and a wheel cleaner from turtle wax. If am a bit off a hurry I'll use the car shampoo and wash mitt to wash the wheels works great too.

I finally bought a Daytona Speed Master Wheel Brush for use with my wife's BMW. The price turned me off for the longest time (still does) but I got a 20% off deal with free shipping so I went ahead and pulled the trigger. Come to find out it's absolutely useless on Bimmer 328 XI wheels. The limited space between the inner wheel surface and the brake disc and/or caliper makes it impossible for the brush to actually fit in that space and thoroughly clean the inner wheel surface.

The wheel woolies would probably work....but seriously - $45???

Brad - I'm thinking of going your route and checking out my local Wal Mart for some sort of bottle scrubber...

Suprised these haven't been mentioned.

I've been using microfiber gloves and a lug brush for years and find it's perfect for me. No matter what brush I use It always seems to not quite get all the little corners and crevices like I would like it too. Not to mention there you don't have to stop and bend or adjust the brush...with a glove you move your finger and can get the back of the spokes, etc without issue. There are very few wheels where I need to pull out the EZ brush to clean the insides of the wheel. I may go Brad's route for cleaning around calipers but for now I just roll the car back if I don't have clearance around the caliper. Maybe one wheel wollie is in order for this instead...

but I swear by the microfiber gloves. For those of you that are using a towel try the gloves instead.

I can usually get something (big swab, piece of MF...*something*) to fit between the wheel barrel and the caliper, but often it's simpler, easier, and even quicker to just move the vehicle half-a-wheel-revolution so I can access that area easier.

I just found a microfiber dusting wand at Home Depot for $4. It has microfiber fingers on it like a wash mit, is about 20" long, and the microfiber is over a wire band. Its great because the microfiber is soft enough, but the internal structure of the bendable wire lets you get it up on an edge a bit. It's also only about a quarter inch thick so it fits behind even the tightest rotors. It is pretty soft - not too great for a filthy wheel, but with the amount of APC works well. Cheap, effective, and easily thrown in the washing machine.

I purchased an EZ Detail brush to clean the inside of my rims, but the bristles were way too soft. The reach was fine, but that was about it. Anyone know of any similar type brushes with hard bristles??

My absolute favorite: the simple puff scrubber. Cheap, effective and flat so it slides between my wheels and the caliper on the Porsches where there is very little space.

Brad

That actually looks like it would be perfect. Where did you find it???

I was at Wal-Mart and my local Price Chopper tonight looking for one but didn't have any luck. I did see something similar in Price Chopper but it had a wire core. Does the one you use have a metal wire frame inside of the "puff" on the top of it?
