What is this and how do I remove it? (Boat prop)

It looks like mineral build up, maybe calcium (the white deposites). Is there an easy way to remove it, preferably chemicaly. I really havent tried anything on it, but it does chip off with some effort.

No, Im not sure. It doesn't feel or look like old paint though, there is a black coating underneth it too. sorry for the crappy pic (Iphone) :(
 
It wouldn't surprise me if that was a layer of paint or plating past its prime. You might have to sand and repaint. Flap wheel on a drill ought to do it.

Ok I'll try that, what should I paint it with? I have some epoxy appliance spray paint that seems pretty tough.
 
Looks like the paint is coming off and you are seeing the primer. I used an etching primer on mine and then painted it with an epoxy type paint.
 
Do you know the history of the boat? Possibly anti-fouling paint or water scum. Easy test for the scum is acid, it will foam-bubble when treated.
 
If it was calicum deposits it would be all over the prop also. If it is calicum then try meric(sp) acid. It should take it right off.

I work at a boat shop and we stock(and order if we don't have it) a brand called mar pro paint. They make a primer, paint to match original manufactures color, and clear. They are all in rattle cans. I would hit the yellow pages and call people near you. Good luck

The prop is stainless by the looks of his pic, may not be on there?

I would check your engines anodes, they could need replacing?

Also post your question/pic at Boats for Sale, New Boats, Used Boats, Boat Parts - iboats.com I am sure other people over there have had similar issues? Good luck and be sure to try some scum removers etc first before getting into new paint/primer, your old paint maybe underneath all that scum, if that is what it is?

thanks for the input everyone, The owner failed to mention the ovner before him left the boat in the water :wall , this make me think it is indeed mineral deposits. I think Ill try to clean it off with some toilet bowl cleaner and see if that cuts it.
