What is the thinnest factory paint you've found? (for those with a PTG)

The "clearcoat" specs provided are courtesy of Ford and Chrysler, plus Hyundai, Kia and Mazda. Note, an old car like my Bird did not have an ecoat, just one coat of surface primer and an "impregnated base clear", IE, the base color and the clear were applied at the same time, and in curing, the a large portion of the clear rose to the top-IE, very thin paint film build.

 
I once did a 3 series BMW that was low 80s high 70s all over the whole car. Never seen anything like that before. Proceeded to cut as usual. :D

You don't really "know" how much clear there is. Just a general presumption that the clear constitutes roughly half the thickness. Logic would dictate that the E coat/primer coats don't vary much. The color coat probably varies a little depending on the color and how much paint it takes to achieve consistent coverage. I would presume the clear coat is where the largest variance is so the thinner the overall thickness, the lower the percentage represented by the clear. (I suspect Ron would have more insight on this.)

Dropping the other shoe ... I've been staring at this '04 Challenge Stradale late today and just out of curiosity took some quick readings (was on my way out the door). It was 6's and 7's on the hood and roof but varied 1.5 Mils - i can't seem to get comfortable with Microns :( - on the drivers door. If I remember low 5 - high 6+ mils.



I'll take a closer look tomorrow, but I don't think it's ever been corrected. It's not trashed; just swirled up and a crummy yellow, orange peel looking clear bra. I'm not going to have it long enough to remove the film this time around. Need to have it done by Thursday :nervous:



So I'm going with your input; where the readings drop off, I'll assume less clear or it's been worked previously.
