What is hazing?

I've seen people refer to hazing when using a heavier cut compound or such. What exactly does this refer to, light swirls? I ask because on the area I have done on my hood so far it finished up great using OHC. I still have a few scratches that I want to work on, but I really don't see any swirls. Yet after cleaning it up with a MF I see what appears to be a light haze, like when there is a bit of residue left when you don't quite get all the remaining wax, etc. off the paint. And it's not that the entire area looks this way, just a few spots here and there. I tried a QD and it didn't help. I assume this is the sort of thing people are talking about, where I will need to go over it with OP to finish it up?
 
It sounds like what you're describing is hazing. Haze is micromarring, so if you look closely you'll see it's millions of tiny little scratches from the abrasives. OP should clear it up. Here is an example of heavy hazing:
