What happened to these wheels?!

These wheel were brought to me to see if I could clean them up. They are from a BMW 5 series and I was told that they have been sitting in a barn for the last year or so. There is some bad etching it looks like on the aluminumu part of the wheel.

Just wondering what I should use to try and remove this ugliness from these wheels?

Any input is appreciated!

Looks like they clear coat on the wheels is failing.

I agree looks like clear coat failing or using an acid wheel cleaner on hot wheels.

oh yeah looks like someone uses something on them and then let them sit. Clear is messed up.

The FR500's I use to have on my mustang would do this all of the time. They were black with the aluminum lip like these. It may be the clear coat like mentioned above. But I would just take Mothers billet aluminum polish and mine would go away for a little while .
