what does your significant other think about your obsession with detailing?

i was just curious... is your significant other understanding about your autopian obsession with detailing and all the $$$ you spend on it?

mine is getting better at it. before she would complain that i would be spending too much time on the car and not with her, but its better now.

She doesnt mind when things are going good! But when you have to spend time marketing yourself, it does tend to take away from family times, and thats when I hear about it.....

She once gave me a hard time about spending so much time on the vehicles. Once she bought her present car(Chrysler 300) it became a different story. The last word I got from the wife is, You can buy anything that you want but I would like it very much if you would use Zaino on my car. Apparently she looked at the products a little more than I thought. So I keep Zaino around for her and go my merry way with all the other products.

my significant other used to be bad. She was always giving me the "you spend more time with your cars than you do with me." And then she got a used eclipse. One day my tC and her eclipse were parked next to each other on a sunny florida afternoon. Then she noticed how she had all sorts of swirling, waterspot etching, and other defects, while my car had next to none. A week later I detailed her car and got it looking great, hardly and swirling left at all. Ever since then, she has really calmed down about the detailing.

My wife still thinks I spend too much time on the cars. However, I think I am making progress with her because she is almost as paranoid as me about door dings now when parking. The other day she says to me, "Why didn't you park next to that car? It has four doors and this one has two so they're longer and can reach closer to our car." I just had to say wow to that one. She does however love when the car is freshly cleaned and waxed. Like blkZ28 said, "who wouldn't?"

She Loves it when I clean the interior, she could care less about the exterior.

me: So how hard did you hit the curb

her: smile...pause... how did you know?

me: I saw it when I cleaned the rim

her: oh...not too hard...barely even touched

me: really...smile

If I had a nickel for every time I've had that exact conversation. Thank goodness so far she has spared the rims on the CR-V any punishment.

M wife comes into the garage and gives me a kiss and thanks me for doing all the work on the cars to keep them looking and driving nice!

Couldn't have said it better. However, on the flip side, I must learn to manage my time better at times because my family does come first, and I really do want to spend time with them. Having said that, it doesn't always play out that way.

My wife I'm sure likes a clean car, but honestly I think she could care less. She always parks close to other vehicles, under trees, goes through a stone paved park right after I washed the car and dressed the tires, etc, etc....

Whilst I do spend a fair amount of time cleaning the car, I have not really spent a lot of money on products therefore my wife is (mostly) ok about the cleaning time.

The other advantage is that I am never far away. I very rarely go anywhere without my wife and so she aways knows where I am.

Luckily my wife is very cool about it. Almost too much, she managed to use that to talk me into buying a black CRV last spring. :LOLOL

I've had that conversation more than once. Most recently...

Ring ring...

me: hello...

her: My car is shaking kinda bad.

me: what did you hit?

Her: nothing.

me: got a flat tire maybe?

her: no I checked. after I ran over that piece of wood on the road I thought I might have a nail in the tire...

me: piece of wood? How big?

her: or I don't know, I think it was a 2x4 or something. do you think thats the problem?

me: so did it start shaking after you hit it?

her: I think so

Gets car home... upon inspection the rim is very obviously bent.

me: 2x4?

her: well it looks like that board over ther in the garage

me: uhhh... thats a 4x4 post...

her: yeah well I was going 70, its not like I tried to measure it!!!

me: jaw hits floor.

That car was never the same even though Honda gave it a total inspection. Traded it off a year later. :D

Oh as far as her being ok with me being compulsive obsessive with keeping the vehicles clean... she loves it. Not only that, but she's acutally pretty good at helping out. I can give her all the interior stuff and she'll detail the heck out of it. She even went out and bought little brushes to clean out her vents and aroudn the radios. :D

We have been together four years, and as long as I make some money doing it she seems fine with it. I love dating a finance and accounting major :)
