What do you think of these magnesium rims?

i don't know about magnesium rims. i know on motorcycles most riders stay away from magnesium rims for the street because they tend to really blow up if you hit a bad pothole. they're really made for the track and can't stand up to the rigors of regular street surfaces. i would think that would apply moreso for car wheels since the tires are so low profile.

Yep, same thing is recommended for Mg wheels on porsches; good for track, bad for street. And if you crack one, you will be SOL.

My Dad had them on his 88' TT Callaway. I loved them, very light wheels.

Edwin, I really prefer stock wheels also. I actually like the way the original 1990 wheels look. But I also really like the A-molds on the car now, and I love Dymags. Plus, this keeps the originals in nice shape. :)

I'm not sure if these ever came on a Callaway SuperNatural car. They mostly used OZ wheels like this (seen on one of the two amazing twin-turbo LT5 Super Speedsters):

It's possible some ZR-1's had the Dymags. Callaway did a lot of custom type stuff, so every car was somewhat different. I don't know.

I believe the Dymag's are a few pounds lighter, but the A-molds I have now are pretty light too, lighter than the original wheels.

The guy selling them is offering them for $3000 shipped. Dymags from Callaway new sell for I believe $1800? That's for the 17x9.5" wheel the TT had. It's hard to say how much the 17x11" was. I heard MidAmerica used to sell them for $950 per front and $1150 per rear, but not in gunmetal, just in the original "aluminum" color. Plus, these have matched center caps, the centers on the original Dymags was the factory machined look since the non-Callaway wheels were a machined face. I always thought it was odd to have the center not painted to match the Dymag.

Anyway... it seems like a fair price, Dymags are fairly hard to find. And he has the Low Tire Pressure Warning Sensors mounted to the rims already.

I'll have to think about it. I'm not sure I'm ready to drop $3k on cosmetics, though I do need new tires anyway...

heheh, since you resurrected the thread, here's some better chops of the car with different rims:

Current:

Black GS-style:

Black chrome (and a terrible chop):

I think for now I'll just keep my wheels. I think in the future I want to upgrade for performance, or closer to stock. So I'd either like to get real GM A-molds (mine aren't), or else get Dymags or the second-gen Dymags since they are very light. Spending that kind of money just for an appearance change, I just can't see it...

all these wheels are cool. and i like the dymag. as we can see, they all fit and gives your car a distinctive outlook. we just need to catch up for our own taste. :woot2:

Just FYI, but these are the "2nd gen" of Dymags. Dymag makes a lot of wheels, so they aren't exactly a 2nd gen, but they were the 2nd style made in Corvette/ZR-1 sizes as far as I know.

That is a *much* better looking wheel than the "1st gen" Dymag.

I think so too. I like the original Dymags, but they are sort of 80's. The spokes are a bit thick and flat. And the raised flat center surface is a bit odd. I dunno, they are nice but just a little odd sometimes. The 2nd style really looks neater, and it retains the deep lug look. I kind of like that more than a deep dish as it's sort of more subtle but when you see how deep the lugs are it really makes the wheel seem wide.

Here's another shot:

There's a guy selling a set, but for the same prices as those gunmetal 1st gens, and without the tire pressure sensors. They are cool, but I think I'll just dream for now.

2nd set....do it. pull the trigger and pay the piper. your dreams will soon turn into nightmares and prevent you from sleeping....it's been a month. how many times have you dreamed of them? get them now...

sorry. that was my peer pressuring alterego. i have to agree though.

Heheh, I mostly only think of it when I pull the wheels off. The rears with tires must be 50 lbs each.

But I really like the current ones. They are a great style. Plus I just got new tires mounted...
