Interestingly I worked on a dark steel grey Mazda 6 yesterday (same car I think?). Some of the hardest paint I've *ever* encountered, and I've encountered a lot of hard paint. It wasn't particularly thin though. I wonder if perhaps the area you sanded was a re-spray.
