This was only suppose to be a touch up type of repair obviously because I'm painting out side. but.... MULIGAN!!! I'll be redoing the paint on this for sure I put to much yellow in it. Well that was an awesome waste of half my day. I think I'll just take color code and go buy it for the re do.

It didn't look that bad......:notme:, But one thing for sure this helps folks who are looking into doing it themselves also. When you redo it, can you write the steps you have taken for us to follow along?

Disregarding the color mismatch I think the section came out quite good! Gloss is great and the panels are smooth and wave / defect free.

Have some paint mixed up according to the paint code and you should make our much better....:bigups

Thanks Angelo I'm guessing the whisling is in a sarcastic tone lol. And yeah It'll be a couple days I can't just restrip right now with out making a huge mess and headache

Silver can be a PITA. I always have a color scan done. Pressure, humidity, reducers can all factor in to on flop changing color appearance. Great effort though. All I can say is press forward you'll get it.

Yes, silver CAN be a PITA... that's what has me nervous about the repair I need to have done to one of my personal vehicles that got hit in a parking lot last week :( That I won't have factory paint on the front bumper already has me annoyed, if the color match is bad too it'll be that much more annoying.

Jsmooth, are you using a mixing bank from one of the major suppliers (PPG/Dupont/et al.)? If so I'm surprised you don't have access to their color formulas and variations based on spray-out card results...

This is why most repair shops blend, based on all of the variables mentioned above. It's a great looking repair regardless. The color shifting is an unfortunate circumstance.

Thanks guys! When she picked up the car if I didn't tell her I'm sure she wouldn't of noticed lol. And I dont have the color banks I for it all by experience but I have alot of trouble with water based stuff. I'm awesome with solvent but cali doesn't let us use it anymore. I set up a re-do next thursday to get it fixxed i'll post the repaint and I already think I got the color right, It's hard to tell though because waterbased looks so funny when you spray it, i'll try to get a pic for you guys because it lays down like neon green then dries silver lol

Well for what I see, it looks awesome the work you done to it, I know that getting the color right on is a pain in the a$$. i spent a many hours a day just matching colors for bridges to match the US Color Standards that are a pain and have to wear a respirator and gloves.

Jsmooth dont feel basd at all, even a professional painter will blend a repair like that into the next panel. When you add to much yellow you can negate the yellow by adding blue.

I think you should try blending into the door next time otherwise it could be a difficult time trying for a perfect match.

Everything else looks great!:bigups

Thank you! And Yeah I thought about blending the door, but It was a touch up job so I didn't really charge enough to justify the time especially if it came out wrong or the blend line was super apparent. I thought it might lead to me painting the whole side of the car lol

looks very good for a spot repair like that....like bobby said, no waves nice and smooth high gloss..what paint did you use on it? cant tell that its too yellow from the pics but that is why if your matching paint, go get it made. great job though!

and to charlie, some times you can buy new plastic parts direct from car manufacturer pre-painted so could look into that, dont get worried!, just trust the guy mixing your paint and prep properly and you will be golden, plastic parts on OEM bumpers cannot be baked at high temps like oem paint on steel so the repair will be almost the same, you could heat up the area you are working in after your done with final coats of clear using heaters or infrared lighting. good luck with that repair!

I see. You really give more then 100 percent!:bigups

Metallics are next to impossible to get a perfect color match even if the color matches there will be a slight difference just because of spraying and the way the metallics lay ,unfortunetly.Especially noticable in the sun.

Hopefully you get it close enough ,doesnt sound like your customer is that fussy!

Yeah, I've got plenty of experience working with body shops and refinishing, unfortunately most of the time even pre-painted parts (which for this particular vehicle aren't available) don't match anyway since the paint is applied elsewhere out of a different batch.

I'm sure it will be fine, I just always prefer factory original.

Go to the paint store take the gas cap off they have machines that can read the paint code, something like that, and they can get you a perfect match.

Re: Well paint mixing is harder than it looks **Update**

Ok so this car came back to today, time to fix it here ya go!

First thing I have to scuff all the paint with some 800grit
bd9c3bf3.jpg

tape up surrounding panels
bd9c3bf3.jpg

scuff the rest of the paint with 1500 all the way to the edge the 800 was to get down to the color that was off

Ok here is the fun part in Cali you have to use water based paint this is what it looks when its wet, nice and blue so I was gonna buy this paint but I in good fashion forgot all about this car coming in today so I had to take a another crack at mixxing it so there is some of my trial and error lol

Here is laying the color down usually you try to color as little as possible but you almost always have to clear the whole panel

Color is really close this time 1000 times better. It looks a little off because I sprayed 3 layers of clear on this(it was windy today ton of dust in this). I'll have her come back in about 10 days and i'll wet sand and polish it, Ill post final results then! Should be fine though for touch up work and a 16 year old is driving this car there were 4 new dents on it since last week lol.

Thanks for looking
