We have a Fein Down...

jimmybuffit

That'll buff right out!
I have spoken highly in the past of the Fein rotary. Mine simply stopped today, after 18 months of daily use. Not event related; it just stopped, with no warning, no symptoms.

I have a new one on the way from Coastal Tool, and the original will soon be shipped to Chicago for service.

Thought I'd make an attempt at being 'fair and balanced'.

Jim

That's good information to know...please keep us updated on the verdict (if you get one). I will most likely be purchasing a Fein, when the time comes for a rotary.

Congratulations... You burned out a solid tool!!! Must mean you are nice and busy! did you blow out the brushes everycouple days?? did it just stop, or did it do a real slow down then cease?

How much did yours cost you Jim? I looked into a Fein a while back and they are selling for an average of $750 CDN! I can almost buy 3 Makitas for that price. I have 3 Makitas right now and have not had a single problem (knock on wood) in almost 2 years with the oldest one. I don't think we have even had to change the brushes yet and we buff all day six days a week. I have been pretty lucky with my Makitas since I switched over from the garbage Dewalts that I had nothing but problems with.

So I'm buffing the hood, stop to evaluate, try to start up aga. Nothing. No change in sound, speed, or 'feel'. Just dead.

Do we blow it ? Not properly, apparently. My assistant (has a EE Degree) began to diassemble the tool, an found quite a buildup of wool within the very compact interior! Once he confirmed power to a certain point, he admitted defeat. Special tools are required to really disassemble the the very compct tool. When we receive the replacement, we'll ship the damaged item off for repair.

I went for a second Fein because of the lightweight, small size, and wonderful balance. I really can buff one handed, safely...

I'll have more...

Jim

Sorry to here about your delema !!! It's probly better It happened now than in Spring or Summer when I would think your a lot more busy

Jimmy B What kind of pads can you use on the Fein ? Would the Edge 2000 system work on it ? TIA

The Fein arbor is the universal size, so commonly avaible backing plates screw right on. While I use some Edge pads, I'm not experienced with the 2000 system, but I'm sure it will work...

Jim

So sorry to hear about your Fein.

I didn't know you had to clean the brushes every now and then. Would this apply to other rotary buffers like the Makita 9227C?

Yes you should clean the brushes in all polishers including the PC if you have a air gun, just blowing out the vent holes every couple days will do the trick

What ever happened to the Fein Jim? Was that a repair under warranty or is it just a one year. Is #2 still kickin'?

Also, how is you Fein vac holding up?

The Fein was sent to Fein HQ in Pittsburgh for (out of warranty) repair.. They needed something like $285 for repair (!), but offered a new one for ~$265. Bummer, but I took it.

So, now I have two Fein Rotaries and four Chicago Electrics. They all see daily use, with the Feins being preferred.

The Vacuum is working out quite well. Keep it clean (filter and bag). We have an extension for the hose which makes it ~20' long - fits/works anywhere in the Shop without moving the machine.

Nice, quality products, built for hard, commercial work. Whicj is what we need...
