Waxing Lexus 460 windshield - water smearing

My friend has a new 460. The window is not water repellent as advertised. When he drives in the rain the water "smears" so bad that he cannot see. He has to pull off of the road. It is worse with the wipers on because the water smears rather than being wiped off. The dealer has changed the windshield and the 2nd windshield does the same thing.

Now the dealer is going to wax the windshield which is suppose to fix the problem!

Isn't this going to make it worse?

Won't it eventually "wear" off?

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Does the Lexus come with some type of dressing on the windshield from the factory? There was a "scratch" on the windsheld which I think was on some type of coating rather than on the glass.

thanks for your help and ideas.

Depends on what kind of wax they use. I put Klasse All In One on my glass last fall and it was still beading water before I reapplied it the other day, albeit not nearly as well. I'd imagine you could get away with 6 months per app so twice a year wouldn't be bad to wax/seal some glass?

My case is dealing with just normal glass. Maybe see what this wax they use does and if it is worse, I would be inquiring as to how you could just get a normal bloody windshield, pick up some product and do it yourself.

I have a Lexus ls460. I don't have problems with the water smearing the glass though. From my prior Lexus, I have learned not to apply anything to the windshield and the front door glass because of the built-in water repellent glass. When I applied a glass sealant on my prior Lexus, the glass sealant would just smear and would not come off the glass...it was like smearing butter all over your windows.

Your friend's ls460 is definitely not normal. He should bring it back to a different Lexus dealership and get this fixed.

I thought I was the only one with the problem. I recently had my windshield replaced at the dealership and now water just smears on the windshield. Did you ever get a resolution on the ls460?

The smearing is due to some kind of build up on the glass that they have on there when they cut the thing I think. Take a straight Dawn solution and just smear it all over the glass with your hands. After that just rinse it off and then it wont smear anymore.

Replacement windshields just have that problem IME. I've had mine replaced multiple times and same thing fixed it ;)

Walmart in my area has a glass stripper in the autobody section, can't remember the name and have never used it.

Wow, this is the first time I heard of such an option, water repellent windshield. In fact, all my windshields end up being water repellent whether I like it or not just due to washing with ONR. I have a very hard time getting any of my windshields to not repel water.

I wonder if this water repellent trait is from the particular material or if it's just a coating. If it's the latter then it's probably going to get damaged and eventually worn off.
