Waxed flat back hood

Some little bits are coming back to me...I think that, at least in part, a lot of it would depend on how the flat/satin finish was attained. Back in the day we did some stuff in that by adding a "flattener" additive to the (single stage) paint. No matter what you did to it, it didn't get a high gloss. These days with so much stuff being b/c, if the flattener were added to the clearcoat I don't think any polishing/waxing would make it shiny. A friend of mine had his Nova painted with flattened paint and he used the old TR-3 stuff on it without ever getting a gloss, just a weird "semi-sheen" that was pretty neat (at least in our wacky teenaged opinions).

I've seen some hotrods/streetrods that were painted in satin-finish paints and they don't gloss up when waxed, they just get a bit "smoother" looking and the finish is slick.
