Wax removal procedure

FinishKareUsa.com Finish Kare makes a product just for paint cleaning. Their website is down right now but I have some and have used it with great results.

I was wondering (newbie here, so cut me some slack)....

If I wanted to remove the wax and clay bar at the same time, would Simple Green (diluted or not?) work as a clay bar lube and remove the old wax at the same time? I buy this stuff by the gallon for cleaning my bowling balls. Does great for removing surface oils on them.

TIA:bigups

Judging by the lack of response, I take it the answer is 'no' and that it was a stupid question.

My bad. Chalk it up to my newbieness.

Nah, it wasn't a dumb question and I dunno if the lack of response really equals a "no".

I don't really like Simple Green for most detailing jobs and I keep it away from my paint. Also, I dunno if it has enough lubricity for use as clay lube and/or whether it will simply dissolve the clay, turning it into a soupy mess (may APCs do this to clay). I bet that's what'd happen; it'd make for a dissolved-clay-mess all over the paint.

THANKS! I better stick to water with a touch of soap as a clay lube then. Maybe I'll find something at Wally World tonight to get the wax removed.

I didn't have much luck at wally world last night. Found a nice MF mitt and a bottle of Megs Gold Class car wash. I also hit one of the closer auto parts stores, but they didn't have much either.

I think I'll hit one of the bigger auto parts stores over the weekend and see if I have any better luck. Will stop back in Wally World again too and look for that Prep-Sol.

Thanks everyone.

Hey, John. I just wanted to see if you've had any luck finding the Wal-Mart prep sol at any of our local Wally World's? I'll be running out tonight to pick some up, so I thought maybe you'd know which locations had it. I'll probably start at the one on Nicholasville Road.
If that's the one at the corner of Man O War then I think I saw at least one can there a while back. I didn't buy any because I already have some similar products. I'm sure Zone or Advance would have something like that..... I remember buying an aerosol can/s from one of those places when I was doing some painting on the '40. The Wal-Mart stuff would be cheaper and you can put some in a spray bottle, just be careful and don't huff it. Actually you might want to call CarQuest and see what they have....... in a gallon container it might be cheaper still in the long run. Since they carry paint you know they'd carry something like that.......... I think the stuff I got from them was the Omni brand.

Yeah, that's the one, John.

I'll call Anthony at CarQuest today, to see what they have. I called them yesterday to see if they could order the 6" 3M Ultrafina pads...No go. They said it doesn't even show up in their system.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have that VW Beetle I need to finish up this weekend, so I need some prep sol. Thanks, John.

Distilled water with a little Gold Class car wash, that is...:bigups Should work, right?

Also, no luck finding the Prep-Sol.

I use 1 cap of Sonax Gloss Shampoo for about 500 ml of distilled water as claybar lube. Works great. :bounce

I know this is heresy on this board, but our automobiles' finishes are much tougher than we give them credit for being. Certainly they can scratch and mar easily, but regarding chemical resistance, they're tough. Look at the abuse they receive in areas which use salt and/or calcium chloride frequently in the winter.

I've used Purple Stuff diluted 1:1 with water for a quick and one time wash to get rid of wax buildup with no residual effects. however, as soon as I had rinsed and dried it, I immediately went ahead with an AIO and sealant coverage. 1991 Red Buick Reatta; original paint with clearcoat.

I'm not familiar with Purple Stuff, but I've seen Purple Power dissolve paint down to the metal and leave a maroon-colored stream in the driveway.

Turtle wacs has a new windseld wash dergent that werks. just spray it on with a roundup spryer and let it set. then just rinch it off and the wax comes right off. you can buy a gallen of it at Walmart. I was there this morning. look on the end cap next to the touch up paint. they had 2 colors when i was there. one was blue and one was green. the green one works best for bugs.
