Wax removal and ONR

Accumulator, the Lexus dealer I'm getting my car from is a Hendrick dealer. Maybe I should ask them what they are using on it. I found out today they get the car tomorrow night and will spend most of the day Wednesday 'working on it'.

ETA: Just sent'em an email

Don't ask them what they are using on it, tell them to DO NOTHING TO IT!!!!!

Yeah, stop 'em before they do it or else reconsider taking the vehicle (no, I'm not kidding). I'm serious, the stuff they use (which *is* great for what it is, which is "auction-prep [stuff] to hide flaws ) will be nearly impossible to get off and you *won't* like it. And there's simply no way to evaluate paint that has that [stuff] on it. No, IPA won't budge it and even strong solvents are only moderately effective.

Just ask ebpcivicsi if you don't believe me...that [stuff] is simply impossible to get off/out of the paint. It's one of those "silicone horror stories" you read about but seldom encounter in real life.

The tire slime they use is pretty awful too.

Otherwise nice dealership chain though.

Well, I asked them to not do it and they said they couldn't let it leave without doing it. Perhaps should have been more forceful but I've got bigger battles to fight. So, my plan now is to see how bad it is and start fresh if a little bit. I don't expect they stuff they put on to last very long.

So preliminary plan is: Wash with P21S for wax removal (maybe IPA wipedown), clay (blue megs), (correction is necessary), OS, OCW.

Anything else to suggest?

sounds like you have a good plan........i dont understand what they cant allow the car to leave without.....

i would have told them, if you " prep the car you are prepping it for someone else to buy !

Just wanted the car enough to not want to walk away from it. The car has been on another dealers lot so probably the gunk was already on it anyway.

Having bought enough new cars, I know exactly what you mean. I have been in a similar situation, where I ask them specifically not to put anything on the car in terms of "prep" but they say that they have a "policy" or some other crap about having to do it. If it is a vehicle I really want, and you have already gone through a ton of time and energy to make the deal, you aren't going to walk away from it just because they did some prep work....unless of course the paint shows some problems.

Well, we'll find out tomorrow afternoon (smiles and crosses fingers). I asked what kind of products they use and the answer was 'commercial' and 'maybe dow'. Told me I needed to get meguiar's because that's what his friend that takes care of multi-hundred thousand dollar restorations. Not meaning to rag on the guy because he's been quite nice an very helpful.

Personally, I'd still walk. If I am paying good money for a car, it better be exactly the way I specify or no deal. I'm the customer. They want my money, they will keep their grubby hands and crappy products off the car.

I certainly agree in principle, but I can tell you that reality and practicality of the matter can be a different story.

Just depends on, well....all the stuff it depends on. I for one have walked away from a number of cars, including new ones, right at the last moment over "minor" issues (their opinion, not mine). Seriously, I dictate the terms or I deal with somebody else.

Well, maybe every Hendrick dealership uses different stuff and you'll get lucky.

The stuff that was on my Yukon would *NOT* come off with anything a normal person would try, but then it *was* really durable if you need to find an upside. I was pretty unhappy about it, but they'd had the vehicle for quite a while before I ever looked at it so I couldn't really blame them.

Thought: find out *specifically* what they used. IF it gets to be an issue a) you could just keep using the stuff, and b) at least we'd know what it is. Heh heh, I'd wander around (past the "no customers allowed" signs), find their prep guys, and see for myself.

Not surprised your guy was otherwise OK to deal with, I still think it's a good dealership chain, they just use the wrong stuff. (That "gotta do it" comment though...wouldn't have flown with me but hey, I'm *me* :o )

Exactly right.

Like I said, its one thing to walk away for the simple fact that they put something on the paint which otherwise looks fine, and quite another to walk away when the paint shows issues of one kind or another.

Rob Tomlin- And I'm probably coming at this for a certain perspective as I was buying a (quite) used vehicle where the concealing was a pretty serious concern.

If you are going to polish the car, no point in removing whatever is on the car.

I must comment that, at least from personal experience, there is one exception to this. If you've recently waxed the car you are polishing (I'm talking days), it will be worth trying to strip the wax off. I polished my car a week after putting down a nice fat layer of SV Samurai, and I had little polish and wax balls flying everywhere, and my polish was breaking down in a really funky fashion (was turning to a water like consistency instead of clearing up).

If it's the same stuff they used on my Yukon, you *will* have to get it off, or at least compromise it, before you can effectively polish. Diamond cut on twisted wool wouldn't work right on that stuff. It was apparently the kind of silicon-base stuff like Menzerna lectures about, it's *not* just some cheapie wax/sealant that you can polish through.

But again, I'm hoping it's not that stuff.

Scottwax said:
Are you kidding? If polishing will remove a bit of the clear coat, do you really think a wax or sealant can stand up to it?

But there are products(Menzerna seems to be the most frequent for me) where a surface that isnt completely clean and the products act a fool and after 2 passes you get nice little balls of spit and splotches of tacked on polish that require a ton of effort to remove.

After the surface was completely clean (thorough IPA wipedowns sometimes multiple) the symptoms resolved.

Though I suppose it could be that each time the humidity or something environmental was the cause but with/inamount of time it took to wipe everything down that factor changed.

i have heard of Tech Choice, and actually use some of their stuff. a ton of dealerships around ehre use their stuff. They are also called TRT....same stuff. i use their quick yellow wax, and it is identicle to MEGS quick yellow. same smell, feel, same use, same durability. i also use their tire shine, APC, wheel cleaner, adhesive remover, paint thinner.....its all pretty decent stuff at a GREAT price. for an entire gallon of the quick yellow wax, i paid $25.

hhere theres website... Detailing Supplies Chemicals & Equipment

everything to the right of the mothers QD is TRT (or technicians choice)
