wax apply?

I want to apply some hard wax on my diamond black metalic BMW.

Is it better do it by hand or machine, I have new polish machine with speed settings.

What speed to use? How long to keep wax on car before removing?

umm yea apply the wax by hand. don't touch paint with a machine unless you have to. And applying wax is definatly something you don't need a machine for.

That's a rotary; I wouldn't use it to apply wax.

But I *do* use PCs/Cyclos for about 99% of my wax applications (the exception being Souveran on the Jag). I usually do sealants by machine, but I've been doing wax by machine for over 20 years. Doesn't seem to be any downside compared to by-hand application, but to each their own...

ok, I will apply it by hand. Just wanted to know how long to keep the wax on the paint before wiping? And for wiping I was planned to use microfiber towel to avoid scratches. Hope that 4 months old paintwork doesn't need polish, wax should be enough.:hmph:

today I tried to wax one piece of hood, seems fine, glossy:)

BUT, when I parked the car, some dust accumulated on paint but It was much more visible on the waxed part. Whole car was a little dusty, but waxed part 3 times more. Is this normal or what? I will try to take a photo of that tommorow.

I applied wax by hand for quite a while before getting a PC, and now I won't go back. The PC is fast and efficient. I can put on a nice even coat using less product in less time when compared to hand and I am unable to tell any bit of difference in looks. I love it!

I always apply by Hand. I've found that using the PC is harder to control where the wax is going if I don't want to get it on any plastic parts of the car. I buff it off by machine though.

bwlucas- Yeah, I often "cut in" by hand around areas where I don't want the wax ending up. FWIW I find the Cyclo much easier to control in this regard compared to the PC, and I tend to forget about PC-specific issues when discussing "by machine" stuff :o

Could be static electricity from the rubbing/buffing, could be dust sticking to the wax (some waxes are a little "tacky").

If this continues to be a problem, you might want to try one of the QDs that sometimes help with this (e.g., FK425).

Wax application with a orbital buffer will give a thin, even coat. This makes it easier to remove the wax as well.

As far as your "dust", you might want to go over the car with a QD or "gloss enhancer" to remove polish dust and give it some additional gloss. Zaino Z8, FK1 425, are just a couple of examples.
