Water spotted 2002 Taurus

My mother parks her Taurus outside every day and the only washing it sees is at the automatic car wash when she gets gas. The paint is dull and has the most horrendous water spots i've ever seen. I've heard of something called an acid bath but I must be bad at searching because I didn't get any information when I look through the site.

What's the best way to get rid of these? Should I try a light polish (my freind has some Griots, otherwise I'd need to head to the store) or something different?

Some quick searching on googled told me to wash the car as I normally do, then apply the vinegar with a sponge, let it sit for 90 seconds, then rinse. Is this method satisfactory to you autopians?

I would try the vinegar diluted first. If that doesn't work then go full strength. Other things you could use would be AIO and something with slight abrasives like SSR 2.5.

I would just so straight to SSR 2.5 to handle all the swirls as well and bring some shine back to the paint.

Trying the vinegar diluted is a waste of your time and the vinegar. If the car has been as neglected as you say, go straight to full strength white vinegar. It can be purchased by the gallon at most grocery stores. It is a very weak acid and will not damage modern paint.

Also, see my additional post here--http://autopia.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55356&perpage=12&highlight=vinegar&pagenumber=5

Definetly go full strength with the vinegar. Also, you're gonna want to compound that paint. I personally love Menzerna PG, but SSR2.5 is a little more user-friendly/harder to screw up with. If the spots are really bad, your only hope is going to be to level the paint with 2000grit and a rotary. That's best left to a pro, trust me. Its something I hate to do myself (fear of F-ing up bigtime), and I've got a decent level of experience.
