Water Spots

Our black Mercedes GL450 sat out in the sprinklers one night on our recent vacation. After I washed it the spots still remain. THis car had 2 coats of Zaino Z5 on it. Why do the spots go through the wax. I ended up having to take SIP to it to remove most of them. It's frustrating that we spend so much time detailing our cars and a little sprinkler water can ruin everything.

a wax like #16 or 476 will protect better......IMO
 
I had that happen to my black Dakota quad cab. The vinegar didn't do anything. Somebody recommended Windex.. and low and behold it kinda worked... with a lot of elbow grease.



The easiest and best solution was to whip out the Porter Cable random orbital, throw on a white polishing pad with just regular ol' polish, and it was gone. I guess all it needed was a little heat & a pad.



If you don't have a PC, I'd highly recommend one for a black car. I've used it to remove little spots like that a few times, and it's great.



Ain't owning a black car fun? LOL.
 
I usually try detailer and if that does not work I get some cleaner wax or paint cleaner. This usually removes most that really have not etched into paint. In fact, I know include cleaner wax (the small bottle you get with some clays) in my travel kit.
 
try something like megs 66 cleaner wax...you will be polishing out the spots while waxing the car at the same time...plus it fills in/removes light swirling, so your car will look better anyway. Only takes about an hour to hit a car that size for me...

Can Zaino be topped with 476?
 
Believe it or not, the vinegar really does work**. Didn't believe it myself, and had trouble with the stupid spots, then took some distilled white vinegar and soaked up a MF cloth, then gently ran that across some week old sprinkler spots that neither washed away nor qd'd away, and walla, gone in one swipe (I did a few just to make sure). Make sure to wax up afterward.



**It'll ultimately depend upon the extent of the water spot, whether it actually etched into the paint.
 
DG water spot remover smells just like vinegar but the label mentions a different kind of ingredient (not acetic acid, etc).
 
You can also put vinegar in a spray bottle and mist the difficult spots and let it soak for a minute or two. Plus the marks tend to disappear over time.

Even a fresh coat of #16 didn't protect my wife's A8 from Memphis municipal water :( Nasty etching that even aggressive rotary work didn't get out.



And yeah, it was sorta funny...the wax was still beading/slick/etc. but the etching had happened anyhow :nixweiss
