What would you tell someone who has been consistently washing their car with Dawn or laundry detergent for years???

Laundry detergent?!? That's a new one for me

But I dunno if I'd bother telling them anything; unless they live in a vacuum they know there are other products out there and, well, I just don't much care how other people treat their stuff :nixweiss

im a detailing noob, but even i know not to ask that question on this forum (or really any forum). the dawn question never ends well.

Well maybe this is another new one for you. My dad used to wash his old Dodge truck with laundry detergent and a MOP. But it really didn't matter, he painted it with house paint and a brush.

Yeah, I knew a guy who did that (house paint/brush) back in highschool

LOL, yup almost all Dawn thread leads to a debate about whether it is ok to wash your car with Dawn or not, even if that was not the originial. :hmph:

Just say, I didnt know they made "Dawn for Cars"...or you can say " Last time I checked...Dawn was made for dirty dished, not dirty cars"<---Thats the jacka** response!

Tell them to use the furniture polish "Pledge " as a LSP........I actually have seen an older gentleman by my church using Pledge....I had to ask him why and he said he has been using Pledge as a wax for 30 years....:rofl

It seems like this dawn story has been blown way out of proportion. When I used dawn to remove zaino, the water after I rinsed still beaded up quite well on a 10 year old car. Water still beaded after I clayed.

I have a co worker who told me he uses dawn to wash his car. he said he likes using it because he loves suds :nixweiss

My experience has been that unless someone is actively seeking detailing knowledge you're pretty much wasting your breath trying to dispense any.

People I know that aren't into detailing can't relate to why I'd spend the money for special car wash soap when I already have diswashing detergent, etc., on hand. They think car wash soap is the same thing, just repackaged and sold at exhorbitant prices, and when you start talking about wax stripping and lubricity, their eyes glaze over and all they hear is the sound Charlie Brown's teacher makes; Wah Wah Wah, Wah Wah Wah Wah...

Save the wisdom dispensing for the guy that comes to you and says, "Man, what do you do to keep your car looking so good?".
