wash mitts?

It's easy to see marring and swirls on black paint- somewhere there's a post by Accumlator on his swirl-free wash technique. Use a couple of wash mitts (chenille or sheepskin doesn't really matter as long as it's good qualtiy) and make sure to use the two-bucket method.

I'am switching over to Microtex Chenille wash mitts, cheaper and lasts longer. I found sheepskin wash mitts don't really like ONR, they start to shed at the root of the skin for some reason.

I recently purchased a Eurow sheepskin mitt from Walmart for a nice price and I believe it's the same one that PakShak sells for $9. I liked how soft it felt and it held a lot of soapy water, but it felt way too big for my hands, and I have fat hands already. It seem to shed a bit the first time I used it, but by the 2nd time, not only was it shedding excessively, but it started to develop tears all over, as if the "skin" is coming apart. Has anyone else had this problem with the Eurow sheepskin mitts?

I'm currently using Meguiar's microfiber mitt and so far I'm happy with how it's holding up.

+1 Genuine sheepskin washmitt for wash shampoo, chenille for any ONR use. I've also noticed ONR recks havoc on Genuine sheepskin mitts over time.

Same thing with me...

I just blame it on cheap crap from Walmart, and I buy 3 at a time now :spit:

As long as you avoid synthetic mitts, the type of mitt shouldn't matter all that much IMO. Whatever you decide to use, I'd test it on a CD (CD wet, mitt soaked with shampoo solution, same amount of pressure you'll use when washing) and make sure the mitt's material is autopaint-friendly.

Assuming the mitt is OK per the above test, the marring will come from the dirt that's on the vehicle and/or the dirt that gets trapped in the mitt. That's where wash technique comes into the picture ;)

What Accumulator said... and if you buy the cheapo Eurow's... sure they shed, but that an indicator the glove needs replacing when it gets too bald... kinda like the blue lines on the toothbrushes :D I like them, $5 a pop, you drop it... no biggie. Got grout sponges, will be trying those out today!

I have used the 100% cotton Viking brand (not chenille) wash mitts for many years. Never had any problems with them, and they are inexpensive. Only problem is they are harder to find now than they used to be. Now all you see from Viking is the chenille, which I will not use.

I'm not expecting them to last very long for $5 a pop, but it was disintegrating badly during the 2nd wash and by the time I was done, the mitt was unusable. Shouldn't they last a bit longer than this? $5 a pop for every other car wash would end up costing quite a bit, at least for a consumer level detailer.

For the Pro's out there who detail for a living, how often do you replace your wash mitts?

All I use is the new EDGE ShMitt.

I just hit the 100th car used by it today. I'll be posting a review of it and the wheel ShMitt tonight.

Check it out here....

BlackElantraGT,

it was probably a defected mit. I am now using them most of the time and they are great (replaced my viking cotton mitts). I also use the grout sponge from Hd (Accumulator's fault :o ).

Funny about how some mitts hold up and others don't. I'm *still* using the sheepskin ones from the Autopia store and they must be around 2 years old now. I never do anything special with 'em either, in fact I'm pretty neglectful towards them :nixweiss

You lost me on that one  I'm not an advocate of those as they won't work with my wash techniques; must've been somebody else who turned you on to that idea as I only use such things for certain interior jobs (thanks to Grouse for the idea). Glad it works for you BTW.
