Warming up?

When cold, I only let it idle long enough to defrost the window for clear vision. Like others have said, what's important is the temp of the fluids. And it warms them up faster when it is being driven. I take it easy (under 3k rpm) for the first 10 minutes or so, even though my temp gauge may show normal in 1-2 minutes of slow driving. Just cause the temp gauge says it is normal does not mean the oil (or tranny fluid) has warmed up.

Also, my heater gets warm much sooner if I drive off soon instead of letting it idle for 10 minutes.

What I do is:

-start vehicle

-let it idle at the normal 1200 RPM range for about 20 seconds. By then the RPM has dropped to 900.

-Then I usually give it some throttle to about 1200-1300 RPM for anouther 10-15 seconds.

-Put 'er in gear and keep it under 2500 RPM (where the boost kicks in).

-Drive easy for a few minutes (5-6?) and then I'm not scared to get into a little boost. (3500 RPM max).

-After my normal trip of maybe 20 minutes, I'm not scared to romp on 'er.

Driving at say 3000rpm (motorway) driving gets everything to the correct working tempreture much faster than letting the engine idle for 5 minutes. Dont thrash it but drive it.

When i turn on the car, it will idle for as long as it takes me to put on my seatbelt, put the glasses on, and find a good radio station/cd to listen to. Then again, it rarely gets below 40 here.

Ah that must be nice 40 as the low :getdown . the high today is 50-52 and everybody thinks it is summer out :spot 2days ago the high was 35

I let mine warm up for 45-60 seconds. Then the first road out of my neighborhood is a straight 40mph road for about 4 miles. By the time I get to the end of that road, my engine temp gauge shows it at normal operating temp. The next road is 35mph for another several miles. By the time I reach the end of that road, I drive it however I want to.
