Want softer MFs? Like much softer?

Add more vinegar!

I've tried products from standard detergents, degreasers, APCs, dedicated MF cleaners, and just about everything in between. I always seems to come back to the same regimen, but today I went a little over the top. Here's what I did for a load of 12 towels and 4 MF applicators:

-Hot wash with a cup of Gain detergent

-64 oz. distilled white vinegar

-Heavy setting with extra rinse cycle

-Low heat dry for 40 minutes

WOW!

I've always used an ounce or two per MF towel, but today I was feeling over zealous after picking up (3) 1.5 gallon vinegar bottles from Costco this weekend (under $3 each). I just kept dumping until I drained about 1/2 gallon into the mix.

No chemical smells, no residue, just clean, incredibly soft towels.

Hope this helps.

:nono The advice you're giving is very dangerous! That much white vinegar is bad for your towels, they will disintegrate very quickly if you continue with that regimen!

Oh, and I just noticed, you said to use a cup of detergent and you are wahsing only 14 towels. That's way too much and will only cause buildup and eventual stiffness in your towels. If you've been using that much then no wonder your towels seemed so much softer, the excess vinegar removed a lot of buildup all at once.

I'm pretty sure Sean doesn't mean for this to be done all the time, because hey that's a LOT of vinegar!

It makes sense why it works though. All that acid is really gonna 'clean house'. :lol

I did some research as well and I couldn't find anything that suggested Vineger would damage any type of fabric, actually from what I could find it is recommended for almost everything.

I didn't realize it was such a versital liquid. From killing weeds, to being a fertilizer for some types of plants, cleaning clothes...

Exactly my thoughts.

My mother uses it to wash her vegetables and fruits from pesticides before eating. It's like WD-40 in respect to it's plethora of uses.

http://www.vinegartips.com/laundry/ (says: "The acid in white distilled vinegar is too mild to harm fabrics, yet strong enough to dissolve the alkalies in soaps and detergents. Besides removing soap, white distilled vinegar prevents yellowing, acts as a fabric softener and static cling reducer, and attacks mold and mildew.")

Have you used them yet, are they streaking or are they ok?

Used four towels out of the load on my personal vehicle just now. The WW MF was back like new. I was able to successfully blot my entire car after washing. Two other MFs were used for wheel and jam duty and the last for Z8 application. All worked as good as I've ever used.

Obviously nobody is listening here... let me put it a little differently... 35+ years in the textile business and I'm telling you THAT MUCH WILL CAUSE DAMAGE. We use vinegar solutuions to break down fibers in some fabrics in order to make the brushing process easier and more uniform. Whatever research anyone has done is not being read correctly. Keep in mind that while small quantities will work extreme large amounts like this will eventually do damage. Too much of a good thing is still too much!

I'll have to try that (although probably not that much vinegar) for every few loads and see if it keeps towels softer. :)

you should only use as much vinager as it takes to reduce the PH of your detergent/water load to 7.

find this out by filling your wash load, with towels, fill it with water, insert detergent, run agitation for 2 min.

then stop, check with ph test kit, 3 bucks at pool supply. Add 1/2 cup of vinager and run for 2 min. test with kit again.

when Ph hits 7, take note and stop.

I have been adding about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of vinegar in the final rinse when washing my MF's. I notice that they come up softer and cleaner.
