VIN # Research?

That'll buff right out!
Like so many, I'm looking for a particular car on eBay. I want to do my due diligent reseach...

Carfax is not the answer, at least for me.

The owner of a chain of collision centers was kind enough to research my wife's 'new' 01 VW GTI VR6. It has 20,000 miles, but we received a notice for 70,000 mile service, from the Dealer! Turns out to be a clerical error, but I was amazed at how he knew the specifics of 15 service visits for the car...

We know this gentleman casually, thru our church. I don't feel comfortable asking for another favor...

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I work with another large body shop, but feel it would be imposing...

Thanks, Jim

What kind of car? Often times, you can call the local dealership and they can run the VIN and provide you with an service records.

In some States you can run the VIN through the DMV for a fee, and get a list of all titles and liens reported. I'm not sure if you can in Indiana or not, call your local DMV office and check.

An example: MB Dealers will run a VMI (Vehicle Master Inquiry) which provide you with all the work done on the vehicle while under warranty. They will only do this with the owners permission. This is a great way to track miles and problems with the car.

Are you searching for a new vehicle or helping out a friend?

It will be a 'new to me' car. In this case, a 92 Miata with <60K miles. I simply want to be comfortable with a 12 year old purchase...
