Videos of Proper Rotary Technigues

auto magic is crap and those videos are a complete joke. Watch the last one about carpet dressing. I laughed out loud when he said "optical brighteners". I've used their entire line and it's not good. Those videos are for marketing purposes not teaching proper technique.

I have a feeling you are gonna make a lot of friends here too, but I love open minded opinions:chuckle:

Well said. :bestwish

hey everyone is allowed to have their opinions... many people will not like the same product as you...

I appreciate you posting the video.. very interesting.. but the way he used his products was iffy to me...

1) Rick shmidt is terrible at video instructionals... :lol very very forced (btw.. this is as joking comment, I really don't care, but it was funny listening.)

2) was that masking tape he had on his paint? who the heck puts masking tape on their paint? Never put masking tape on anything like that... 1) the glue is to tough, especially in heat... it will stick to your paint... 2) the glue is acidic... very damaging. ONLY use painters tape on your paint.

3) the way he threw the products down on the paint.. I watched the 1500RPM video... he leaves all his products on the unprotected paint.. picks them up, and lays them down roughly back on the paint... thats a HUGE no-no... as well as laying the rotary on the paint. you don't ever lay anything on the paint unless you have a towel protecting it.

I also believed he moved to fast with his rotary, and in unpredicitable patterns.. You have to have methodical fluid motions with a rotary... figure 8, circle, square whatever, just keep it normal don't swing the rotary around like he did.

But again, it is great to see another mans technique.. thanks for posting video david!

But take it with a grain of salt... look at how the real pros do it not just a marketing video by a detailing brand.

oh and BTW... don't ever assume respect or knowledge with post count... you don't gain knowledge per post count.. there are MANY MANY smarter members with fewer post counts than the people with higher post counts.

Trust a guy, like David through the work and knowledge he portrays through his posts... after joining a forum it takes several weeks to learn who you can trust... but it is pretty obvious after that... David has always been helpful, and if I remember right, has some pretty kickbutt detailing threads [example http://autopia.org/forum/car-detailing/85180-extreme-spray-paint-removal-pics.html ] .. trust him because of that.. not his post count.

I agree 100% on the reasons for trusting David. He knows his stuff and has helped me out several times through PM's. I appreciate that. One day, I might be as knowledgable, but I have a ways to go now!

I' replying just in defense for Rick and to clarify a few things. Please don't be offended.

This thread wasn't about products, it was about a video. I realize 99% of the people on this board don't like Auto Magic. That's why I refrain myself from mentioning them. Unlike alot of other *professionals* here that mention their favorite products ever other post?

I should have added a disclaimer to this thread warning people that Rick Schmidt isn't an actor, he's a detailer. :D He's does seem kinda wierd in the video though! (not in person)

I too think that blue tape is better than regular masking tape. This tape was used to show the difference between the buffed side and the unbuffed side. It didn't leave any residue and it didn't damage the paint. Glue from masking tape isn't going to damage paint when left on for a few minutes? I really think you're reading too deep into this and not catching the real point. I also don't think that laying a bottle down on already wet sanded paint is hurting anything. I don't do ritualistically, but you won't hurt your paint if you do. If you notice, Rick layed the buffer on a towel (micro fiber) that was on the paint. Not on bear paint like you said.

How is back and forth unpredictable? Figures 8's seem the most unpredictable pattern you could possible do? You're supposed to work the paint that same way it's gets sprayed out of a paint gun - back and forth. This is news for me? :shocked

But again, it is great to see another mans technique.. thanks for posting video david!

I've seen 100's of people buff cars in my shop, other shops, body shops and in detailing seminars, and I must say that Rick is THE best person I've ever seen behind a rotary. Hands down! He's not a corporate marketing guy that dabels in detailing videos to peddle product. He's develops and trains 1000's of people around the world each year. He also works hands on with Auto Wax in developing new products. He's a wealth of information to say the least. If you get a chance, look into one of his training seminars, you could really enjoy it and learn alot too.

I agree. There alot of high post *pros* on this board that I wouldn't let them wash and wax my rental!

Thanks, I appreciate this. :woot2:

Nice bump Barry. Even though I rarely use AM these days, I still feel Rick Schmidt is an incredible instructor. I and dozens of my detailers learned tons from him. Last time I checked, I didn't see his name on the AM site?
