Vent shade removal question?????

New Normal
Have purchased some chrome in-channel vent shades to install on my Black Silverado. Before I install these new ventsahdes I need to remove the old ones That are on the outside of the window glued on.

In the past I seem to remember someone using fishing line to help in the removal of the vent shades. Should I heat the area with a hairdryer prior to start? What should I use in the removal of the remaining debris that is left on the paint?

Any help or comments will be appreciated before I do try to remove these vent shades.

I looked at the truck online in the efforts of understanding what these trim pieces look like...can you further explain this or post some pics?

The ventshades are attached to the top of the door on each side. IT is a nice addition to the vehicle to allow the window to be opened with out rain coming into the inside of the vehicle. It is an aftermarket 3m tape-on addition.

I have remnants of the 3M tape still on the vehicle and am wondering how I am to get the sticky material off the side of the truck.

To remove adhesive 3M has a remover or in some cases Goo Gone can do the same..depends on how good / bad the glue is...I would start with Goo Gone since that is OTC...then a chemical based polish like PB..Pro polish

OK, I have to take the daughter to work in a few minutes so I will stop at a parts store and get some
GooGone.

Thanks, Beemerboy!!

I'd go with fishing line and use it as a "saw" to remove the tape fromt eh surface. You'd then need a good adhesive remover like the 3M stuff or Goof Off/Goo Gone to remove the residue. You'll probably want to wash and polish the area afterwards.

Well, I did not have much luck with GooGone. Will hit a paint store tomorrow to see about the 3M adhesive remover.

Have removed the ventshades with fishing line and the resulting look with the remaining adhesive is hideous.Hope I have enough strength tomorrow to get the area clean.

If that doesn't work I would call the dealership and find out what they would use...since these are after market they would have a good idea about what to use in getting the glue off

use a heat gun before the goo gone , or try prep-sol or mineral spirits with a plastic blade :)

Well it was cool this am and got to do a little work on the adhesive that was left on the vehicle using the 3M adhesive remover. In 10 minutes I got about 95% of the adhisve off. It was quick and painless with a plastic putty knife and the 3M adhesive spray.

Did not have a heat gun available but am happy with the results from the good advice that I recieved.

Thanks everyone!!
