Velcro backing came apart on pads

Hey all. I've been a lurker here for a couple of years and just recently started posting and need some help. I just recently bought some propel pads to go with my PC and after only a few days the velcro backing has come apart and now I have foam flying everywhere.

The only thing that I can think of that is causing the glue to come apart is rinsing them?? After each day I've rinsed them in the sink with warm water (no soap) and let them air dry. Do you guys think that this is what's hurting the pads?

Also, what do you guys do to clean your propel pads?
 
That's strange. Most people clean their Propel pads by soaking them in soapy water and rinsing them out. Do you have any pictures you can post so we can get a better look?
 
Yep sure do

This has happend to every pad except my gray finishing pad.

That's definately not normal. I've used the green pad on 9 cars so far. After each use I wash the pad in dawn and hot water (let soak for a couple of hrs and then rinese) and the pad are still close to new. Give Patrick at Excel a call / E-mail. He'a a great guy to deal with and I'm sure he'll help you out.
 
I assume you were using a PC with these? What backing plate? This isn't normal, but I'm not sure if it was defective pads or not. My first impression would be that you used WAY too much pressure while polishing. Please tell us about your process.
 
Yes I got the pads from Excel (great guy to deal with, nothing but positive things to say about him) along with the 5 inch backing plates he sells.

I wouldn't think I'm using too much pressure because if I do the whole PC stops moving all together, which in itself is very annoying since I'm used to a rotary....still trying to get accustomed to the PC.

I'm starting to wonder if it's caused by too much washing and it's breaking down the glue. I've had these only 7 days now and have had to wash them every nite due to the vette I'm trying to finish now. The surface is horrible and I've had to rely alot on the orange and yellow pads.
 
Wow, judging purely from what you just said, this is definitely unusual. My pads have over a dozen washes on them, at least, and they still look like new and I've literally abused a few of them on tough details.



The reason I said too much pressure is because when you apply too much pressure it causes the backingplate to dig into the foam, which in turns tears it all up and ends up looking just like yours.



You shouldn't really be applying any pressure at all, especially with the green and blue pads since they are so soft.

We tried those pads too? guess what..same backing problem. Propel gets two thumbs down in my book. Seems to me they seem to run into a line of bad pads. Most don't have problems but this shouldn't happen even if it only happens to a select few pads.
 
Did this problem with the Propel pads get fixed or are people still having problems with them ?
 
I bought 2 new green pads last week

I used this one to polish my hood with #80

I washed it in a bucket with dish soap and this is what happened

this has never happened to me before and i have pads ive used on at least 15 complete cars

I guess they still have problems with these pads. Contect where ever you bought the pad from or the manufacture. I never had these problems with my old Edge velcro pads.
 
i would have to mail it back then they determine if its manufactures defect

so it would cost me like $5 to see if i get a $8 pad replaced

Sorry to hear that bad news . Emailing that picture to them should be enough proof , but I guess not . Well thats real good customer service . Next time buy Edge pads they stand behind their pads 100% with just an email or phone call .

I have received very good service from them they even replyed to my email on sunday night i figured they wouldnt get it till monday

its just when a product costs almost the same as shipping sometiomes its just better to buy a new one

im sure its just defective somehow

alot of people here have had good results with their pads

and an envelope to dend this one back so he can look at it

So i would say again excellent service from exceldetail
 
When you remove the pads are you working your fingers between the velcro or just peeling the pad off? Don't recall off hand where I read it but one manufacturer recommends you do not peel the pads off the backing plate, they will fail prematurely.
 
the funny thing is it came with directions on how to remove from the backing plate and i had just read it so i was thinking of it as i was removeing the pad . "always grasp the backing material, and gently pull away from the backing plate." so this is what i did it seems to be just a bad pad, im sue it happens to every company. Its how they deal with it when it does that makes you a return customer. and Patrick is very helpful
