using touch up paint

My car has been keyed and i plan to attempt to make it look semi decnt using touch up paint. i have a bottle of paint i got from my bmw dealer and 2 dupli color primer pen things. I plan on emtying one of them and putting the red paint in it. I have some lankga but it seems to take off a little too much touch up paint so the scratch is still visible. does anyone have experience with wet sanding?

I think im probably going to go and primer all the scratches now

What do you need to know about wetsanding? I just recently got these two lovlies out with some touchup/wetsanding/polish - but I will warn you, it takes a lot of time and patience. Before you get to the wetsanding the real work is filling the scratches right. If they are down tot he metal prime them, then go at them with the toothpick method until they are filled (last two 'coats' clear, if you want to use clear). Don't try to fill them all in one pass. It might take 4-5. Mine took 5 'coats'. After you get it filled acceptably then you wetsand, but let it sit for at least 48 hours before you do. The actual wetsanding is easy as long as you're careful. Just get some 2000 grit, soak it overnight. Clean the area really, really well, dab some car wash soap on it, spray with water, and sand with almost no pressure moving in one one direction. Check often, spray with water often and just work really slowly.

The comes the fun part - polishing.

before (sorry for poor quality, they are two scratches down to the metal):

yeah if i could get those results i would be happy. How bad are the marks the sand paper leaves? do they need to be polished out or what?

Yes, the sandpaper marks need to be polished out. You have to be very careful with the actual sandpaper - don't apply much pressure, if any. You don't want to scratch your clear all the way through, so just glide the sandpaper over the touch up and check it regularly until it's flat. When that's done you need to polish. What kind of polish and how many passes you'll need to do depend on how well you wetsanded. You *could* polish this by hand, but you'll have had to wetsanded extremely carefully and with at least 2000 grit paper. Either way, it's much easier with a PC. I used Poorboys SSR2.5 and an LC cutting pad followed by Poorboys SSR1 and a polishing pad. Just about any medium abrasive should take out 2000 grit sandpaper marks (Optimum Compound, Menzera PG or IP, Poorboys SSR2.5/2, Megs DACP, Sonus 2, etc...).

i.e., sand past the clear and expose the base coat, then you are sunk

i dont think my car even has a clear, its a 91 bmw. When i use that meguires 3 step stuff the red paint shows on the rags

You're right, no clear - you'll still need to be careful, it would suck to sand down to the sheet metal. You would just have another touch up on your hands. Good luck.

You guys be extra careful and use a soft foam pad or unigrit blocks .
DO NOT press the sandpaper into the paint unless using foam block a little maybe wont hurt , just run over the blobs and let the paper do most of the work .
Also no need to get it completely flat and level if you plan on rubbing it out and polishing .
