Using Megs D151 and Poli-Seal

Lately, I've been going through some Pro Detail and Click and Brag write-ups and I've noticed some people using Meguiar's D151 and Poli-Seal during details, then throwing an LSP over it. What exactly is the point of using these polish/sealants if you're going to use an LSP with it? Couldn't you get the same results with, for example, M205 and LSP instead of D151 and LSP?

Please keep in mind I'm not calling anyone out or trying to be rude. I'm just genuinely curious as to where products such as these fall into most people's arsenals. I understand when people use them as an inexpensive 1-step for customers, but that seems to be the minority as far as details featuring these 2 products. For the record, I also have both of these myself, but I've gone crazy w/buying more s**t than I actually need and am wondering if I'll ever use them now that I have them.

I was busy today.

I use D151 and Opti-Seal a lot. Quick easy combo and the sealant in D151 makes OS glide on. Very quick and effective way to polish the paint and add a second coat of protection.

I appreciate the response Scott. My question though is where does this fit into your routine? If D151 already has some sealant but you top with OS, it seems like you could just as easily have used M205 instead. I'm basing that off Craigdt's abrasive chart by the way, where those two products have essentially the same cut. Doesn't it just seem like the sealant properties of 151 and Poli-Seal are superfluous if everyone is topping them?

I guess another way to phrase my question is: Does anyone every use these 2 products without putting some LSP over them? In what scenario would someone choose to do this?

Ive never used D151 but I have used poliseal and been happy with leaving that as an LSP... until... All the new WOWO sealants (OS, AW, PGP, etc) came out (and into my knowledge) and it became so easy to add MORE protection to a car. Also, people often put multiple layers of LSPs on cars so whats the different with using something like 151 or PS and then adding another layer of a different LSP?

I would say if you already have 151 or PS, use it up. Most people on here probably wouldn't be satisfied with just using these AIOs for protection. But if you don't own it and want your car protected (which most people here do) just skip it and use your finishing polish and an LSP.

I think the AIOs are designed for the average joe, not for most of us...

This makes sense, but I'm curious about how pros use it. I'm sure that when I use them on MY cars, I'll throw another layer on them. But since they are marketed as an AIO for professional use, it just left me wondering a little. I know D151 especially is marketed for high-volume detailing as a way to save time, but if pros are topping it then it doesn't really seem like a time-saver at all. In all honesty, and I may be totally wrong in my line of thinking, since 151 and 205 seem to have the same level of cut and both use Unigrit non-diminishing abrasives, I bought 32oz of 151 since I'm almost out of 205 and it's roughly half the price of 32oz of 205. Maybe that wasn't the best idea?:nixweiss:nixweiss

I think you hit it on the head when you said its supposed to be a time saver. Most people here top it because they take extra pride in their work and aren't satisfied with the little amount of protection something like 151 offers... Maybe most other detailers (and hacks) use it simply as a time saver and don't care for the maximum amount of protection...

Thats an interesting observation. I would doubt that 205 and D151 are completely equivalent in cut and finish since the 151 is half price. Hopefully pros will chime in as you have peaked my interest. This would save quite a bit of money in the long run..

Yeah, ADS has 12oz and 32oz D151 samples. But who knows, sometimes trying to save a buck may cost more in the long run. I was pretty pleased with the 205, and hopefully will be with 151 as well.

Poli-Seal has more protection than D151 and I tend to use it as a true one step-did in fact today, on a black Avalanche.

D151 has a bit more cut via DA than #205 and like I said, OS glides on over it effortlessly. If it wasn't for how easy OS is to use, I'd probably not put anything over D151.

I did a test with both M205 and D151 side by side and to me D151 took the cake. It has slightly more cut, cost 3x less for a gallon, finishes out almost exactly the same and has a pleasant scent to work with.

Thanks Scott, I'm starting to get a clearer picture of how these products CAN and SHOULD be used. Both appear pretty versatile and I'm starting to think maybe getting these wasn't a complete waste of money on my part.

Appreciate the replies, folks. I love the laid-back vibe on this site!

I didn't google before posting, just because I trust the guys on this site. And I didn't think of it. But I did just now see your write-up on MOL. Good work!

you should do a side by side with pics too mikenap

let us know. Oh and for correction ability maybe add in a few IPA wipedowns to make sure to see the actual correction.

Maybe.. you could also try and use 151 after 105 and see if it can really replace 205?

A lot to ask I know, but figured I would through it out there ....

I noticed you are in San Diego. Do you know where I can pick up D151 here locally? Sorry to be offtopic

I plan to get D151 due to its AOI step product, low-cost, and convenience for customers that only want a detail done in one day.
