Using DeWalt on Jetta?

LikeaRock

...Dreaming on an E92....
Hello all, another question of course, but this time on a buffer :)

Me and my brother-in-law wil be cleaning up his Jetta fairly soon, and it really needs a good wash, clay, swirl/scratch remover, etc. It's got tons of little scratches and all sorts of marring/spider web effects on it (it sat in the garage, they HAD a cat problem, the cats really got to it, ugh). He said they have a DeWalt buffer at the shop, so we plan on using that, although we need to purchase the pads...
Is this thing just as easy as the PC to use, since it is the variable speed model, as far as I've been told. It will be a first time use for both of us, so we want to know what to do to get the best results possible. So would it be easier to just read the PC tutorials since they're pretty much the same machine?
Thanks guys

hmmm. find out if its a rotary or random orbital. big differance in those two. rotarys cause more heat and if not balanced and moved around just right can cause some serious damage and burn to the paint. a random orbit is a lot safer!

If you don't know what it is and/or how it works, it's better left alone. I would hate to hear a horror story about how someone's paint was ruined because they used a tool that they didn't know how to use. I'm not doubting you or your BIL's knowledge, but to me it sounds like you don't know what this machine is capable of, and that could lead to big problems.

To My knowledge dewault doesn't have a variable speed random orbital, so your question: is it the same as article on PC answer NO.I think what you are going to find is that machine will be circular buffer and that is alot harder to learn then a PC, Not that you can not learn it, just is can be alot easier to make mistakes with, and costly mistakes.Circular is great machine in the right hands with correct pads and product.I think being new to this you might want to get porter cable 7424/7336 and start there and with experience can move up to circular and use same pads.

Sorry I was wrong dewalt does have variable speed random orbital
DW443
but the difference with that machine and porter cable, is porter cable speeds range from 2500-6000 dewalt 4300-6800 so I don't think you can use this machine.

Yea, I've read that the PC works wonders since it can go to lower RPM's.
And Joyride, I see where you're coming from, but we all have to learn how to use the machine eventually anyway

You can go to local junkyard and buy hood/fender, cheap
and practice all you want with pc/circular, different pads,
different products without fear of ruining anyones car/trucks
finish, which will cost you alot more to do over than junk panel
costs in first place. Not that I'm saying you wouldn't do great job
with circular first time out, just hate to see burn paint or worse,
first time out and get discouraged is all.
