US Made 100% Terrycloth Towels?

I don't get the whole thing about needing terry to remove LSPs like #16  I use #16 and Collinite 476S more often than any other LSPs and they buff right off with any of my MFs.

Hey, Accumulator, don't blame me, blame Mike Phillips! ;) That's who I heard it from, re: #16. Personally speaking though, I have found that, with a difficult to remove LSP, cotton terry is much more aggressive than any MF I've tried.

superstring- You and I are on opposite sides of the fence regarding the quality of the Griot's towels. I have 'em (I've had three sets...silly me, sometimes I never learn :o ) and IMO they're pretty awful. I'm currently using the "DRY" towels for drying hands in my garage bathroom and the "WAX" towels are cushioning the top of my work cart :D The egyptian cotton towels from Ralph Lauren and others are *infinitely* better in my experience.

Yeah, well I've haven't really done alot of comparisons. But I think "awful" may be a bit harsh! (pun ;) ) My experience is they're nice and plush when new. The original poster asked about 100% cotton terrys and Griot's claim that their's are 100% right down to the stitching, which may not be the case with all.

I was told that when waxing/polishing a car, 100% terrycloth towels made in the USA should be used because towels made in foreign countries don't always contain 100% cotton even though their labels state they do.

Is this true?

I have searched everywhere for towels made in the USA and can't find them. :(

pure zanio bullsh*t, use MF

IIRCfrom what I've read here, one time when terry might still be the best option is when working with heavily oxidized SS paint. Use a terry towel with polish to remove the worst of the oxidation before proceeding with more conventional methods. Am I off on that?

I have been using a supply of Viking 100% cotton wash mitts that I received several years ago from Viking. I burn tested some fibers from the mitts and they ashed. I have not noticed any marring from them on my gray Camry. But I believe that washing technique is extremely important...as important as what is used to wash or apply products.

"My" theory is that the difference between the "old style" cotton terry towel and MF (whether it's synthetic or natural, ie DF Towel) is the SIZE of the fibre. I SUSPECT that MF mars the paint as well, but it's on a scale MUCH SMALLER than "old style" terry and that's the difference; ie the marring is much less noticable. It's NOT that MF is "softer".

Time to get out the electron microscope! ;) :D

...Keep in mind that a towel could be made from 100% cotton AND other fabrics or perhaps it is 100% recycled cotton....

:wall 100% and other? Recycled cotton? Huh?

Guys, there are still a few QUALITY US cotton terry mills around, don't let the foreign hype or uninformed statements like the above steer you wrong. FYI the foreign MF towels ARE terrycloth. It amazes me how these towel discussions get so wacky from misinformation. Find what you like and stay with it, that's the best advice!

By the way, I'm surprised nobody has pointed out that the Autopia CBT is 100% cotton Made in the USA

Martel sells 100% cotton towels made in U.S.A. not quite as good as the Fieldcrest Charisma but pretty good.

If you are using Zaino I strongly recomend Cotton towels or DFtowels.

wash mitts I would prefer SMarnold Snow White wash mitt over the Viking mitt

mongo

DFTowel- Besides the CBT/etc., who (in your opinion) is making the best cotton terry toweling in the US? I haven't kept up with this stuff at all, but rather have just bought what I knew (from prior experience) would satisfy me since Cannon/Fieldcrest apparently went away.

Superstring- Heh heh, "electron microscope" :D

I sure wasn't flaming *you*, just giving my different take, hope you didn't take it personally. I know I sometimes come across differently from what I intend :o

Oh, and ust to be clear, it's not like I think that all cotton terry towels are functionally abrasive on automotive paint..it's sure not like every car was micromarred until MF came out! A while back some Autopian (forget who it was) tested a bunch of different applicators and the cotton ones he tested didn't mar at all.

Yeah, I've read Mike P.'s "cotton with #16" thing too...I suspect it's a way to keep the Meguiar's customers happy (cotton *will* cut right through even a thick layer). I bet it's easier to say "use cotton" (and Meguiar's cotton at that ;) ) than it is to get 'em to put their wax on thin. IMO the whole "hard to buff LSP" thing is usually just a matter of people putting the stuff on too thick. Since I don't care if Meguiar's customers are happy or not I can give a slightly different response than Mike oughta :D

Heh heh, isn't it weird for *me* to be slamming Griot's, what with all the stuff of theirs I pay through the nose for :D I really do think their towels are crappy though. On a similar note, the small 100% cotton polishing cloths they sell are *really* bad, they marred up the Jag something awful and I was being very gentle with them.

Velobard- Yeah, just as the cut of cotton can make polishes behave more aggressively, cotton can be good for oxidized ss too.
