For those out there sweating it out, take plenty of breaks, at least 10 minutes for every half hour of laborus work. Get into the shade if no AC is available. Wear loose light colored clothing if you're gonna be doing things out in the sun. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER! Cool water would be best as it'll absorb into your body faster then ice cold water. Try to avoid excessive caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol as they will dehydrate you quicker then anything else! Eat something that has a little bit of salt in it as it helps your body retain some water, too much though and your blood pressure will skyrocket and you'll bloat up and be miserable! Actually sports drinks will contain enough sodium to keep you hydrated.
As TOGWT posted, if you have ANY of these symptoms, stop whatever you are doing, get into a cool place and call 911 or your family physician! Don't be a knucklehead and chalk it off as exhustion, it'll be the last mistake you ever make!
Your body should give you precursors leading up to having a heat stroke though, ignore these and it'll at best, you'll be in a world of hurt.
Heat Exhaustion Signs/Symptoms:
Profuse sweating
Weakness
Muscle cramps
Headache
Nausea and/or vomiting
Skin may or may not be pale and clammy.
Seek shade, loosen any tight clothing IE belt and shoes, and HYDRATE, water is your friend!
Heat Cramps Signs/Symptoms:
Mostly as stated, cramping and muscle spasms will be prominent as well as excessive sweating and cool, clammy skin is also common but not always present. Pain from these cramps will more often then not be excruciating. The cramps and spasms will be most commonly found in the arms, legs, and in the back and these are the parts of the body detailers use the most!
Hydration is crucial to avoiding Heat Cramps and Exhaustion!
Ignore these signs and symptoms and you'll graduate to heat stroke, then you'll see me and my large bore IV happy medic standing over you.....well as long as your insides haven't been cooked past the point of no return!
