Upgrading my home AV receiver

You don't say what your budget is; lots of good low-end receivers out there (Pioneer, Denon, Onkyo), but I think you're best bargains are at $750-$1500.

I would look at the Denon AVR-991 (see review in latest Sound and Vision Mag; list=$999; $689 from tvzone.com + free ship) and the Marantz SR 7005, $1600. Make sure you get HDMI 1.4a ins/outs. I've seen it for $1250 onnline.

I love Marantz sound, and you can also find bargains on eBay.

Wow, I am almost forgotten about Marantz !

They have always made a really great, clean sounding, receiver that I first heard way back in the mid-70's. Believe they are out of Sunnyvale, CA.

Cant go wrong with these guys either, always had great power, low THD, reasonably priced.

Thanks for the memory jog ! :)

OK, good companies, now to address a point - looking at $600 tops (I am no longer a single guy, I do have a family to support), so please keep this in mind. I used to have a Carver receiver, but was disappointed with it (wimpy on the power end for driving some subs I had built for me about 20 years ago.)

On that budget, the aforementioned Onkyo is how I'd probably go.

I've had the same Onkyo for about 11 years now and I'm still pleased with it and it isn't *fully* out of date yet!!! LOL

Denon and Onkyo would be my first two choices in the good quality and yet still affordable arena.

OK, if $600 +- is your limit, here's what I'd look at:

Pioneeer VSX-1120 (Amazon $544)
Denon AVR-991
Onkyo TX SR-608 or 708 (I believe the 608 is last yrs model and doesn't have HDMI 1.4a)

I'd avoid Sony.
