Is the discoloration getting worse as you work on it?
It almost looks like the finish of the trim is deteriorating.
I'm pretty sure I have seen something similar to that on bumpers and trim before.
Kind of like a primer showing through the finish coat of whatever they used on the trim strip.

:hmmm: that's what I was thinking :idea

Like-wise. Looks like the paint has faded/been burned down to the primer/rubber/plastic.

Could be. Once I can get hold of the car again I'll see if i can get a better handle on the problem.
