undercarriage situation

Hooked For Life
Hi everyone,

I have a new Audi A4 and have noticed the exhaust pipe in the undercarraige has started to discolor a little, normal oxidation I guess.

I'm wondering, since the undercarriage is aluminum, if hitting it with Eagle One Aluminum Wheel cleaner would remove the discolorization and brighten it up. Anyone have expereince wiht EO as an aluminum undercarriage cleaner?

I've attached a picture of the pipe below. I hope you can make what I'm talking about somewhat. It was awkward taking the picture. Glad I did it in the garage so the neighbors couldn't see me!:)

I have the same discolorization on my exhaust pipes (easily seen from behind the car). I've been told to either live with it or paint 'em.

I don't know if you'd want to use EO on that, you'd have to do that pretty often. I'm probably going to paint mine one of these days.

Glad I did it in the garage so the neighbors couldn't see me!

OCD is nothing to be ashamed of....hehe

I think I'll give EO a shot, I considered polishing with some Mother's aluminum polish but I can't get under there far enough to reach. The pic doesn't really show but the discolorization, like a rust color, seems really light so maybe it can come off. If I get it off I wonder if there is a type of spray sealant I could put on it to retard the discoloring. ( In the past on another car I tried Kano labs Weatherpruf but it was messsy and had a yellow tinge to it)

Ok Bill...So just how much time do you spend under your car? ;) I think this goes beyond the normal boundaries of Enthusiast Detailer and potentially into the realm of Obsessive Compulsive Enthusiast Detailer or the Psychotic Enthusiast Detailer, perhaps a board moderator should amend your handle so we all can beware of your posts! :shocked

Seriously, I think you’re going to have to live with some of the discoloration as I would suspect heat cycling to be part of the cause. An aluminum cleaner will remove some road grime. Of course a nice a stainless exhaust would solve your problem to a degree...

Good luck,

Russ

Bill D- Are you sure the item in question is aluminum? Lotsa stainless stuff on the exhaust of my A&S8's (don't remember what my A4 was like). If it's stainless, it's just gonna discolor in time/heat/exposure. "Stain LESS", ya know? Has to do with the "mix"/alloy of the stainless. At least German cars are better than many others in this regard. If it's aluminum, it's PROBABLY anodized or otherwise coated. Nothing you can do for heat-induced discoloration of that, either. Gee, I'm just FULL of good news, huh? :o

Thanks Accumulator,

Maybe it is stainLESS. When I can I'll try to polish it otherwise I'll just focus on the visible parts like the tips, Mothers Billet seems to be working well on them.

I have been caught now. It started with the exhuast tip. I detailed my truck and the exhaust tip looked terrible so out came Eagle One Never Dull Wadding Polish.

Started at the exhaust tip and next thing I know my feet are sticking out from under the truck and my kids are teasing me. I was suprised that the wadding went a long way. I only tore a small piece off.

The wadding polish worked just fine on my exhaust and I went so far to do the bottom belly of the muffler as well.

Wife thinks I am nuts.

Lost Pup,

I'm scheduled to do the same when I fully detail the GF's car Friday ( crossing fingers rain will stay away) :) :up
